Software Developer Statistics 2026

GitHub counts more than 225 million developers on its platform in 2026, while the US Bureau of Labor Statistics counts about 1.7 million employed software developers with a median wage of $135,980 in May 2025. AI coding tools are now standard: 73% of Stack Overflow's 2026 survey respondents use coding assistants and agents daily and Google's DORA research puts AI adoption at 90%, but only 29% of Stack Overflow's 2025 respondents trusted AI accuracy.

Analysis

This page collects 52 figures on software developers: how many there are, what they earn, how hiring is changing, which languages and tools they use, and how they use and trust AI coding assistants. Employment and pay figures cover the United States (BLS) and the European Union (Eurostat). Survey figures come from global developer surveys run in 2025 and 2026 by Stack Overflow, JetBrains, Atlassian, Sonar and Google's DORA program, and platform figures come from GitHub's 2026 Octoverse report.

The developer population keeps growing, but the numbers depend on who is counting. GitHub reports more than 225 million developers on its platform, with the United States at 38.3 million and India at 32 million. Official employment counts are far smaller: the BLS counts about 1.7 million US software developers in 2025, and Eurostat counts just over 10 million ICT specialists across the EU, 5.0% of all employment.

Pay is high and long-term demand is positive, but hiring has not returned to its 2022 peak. The BLS reports a median wage of $135,980 for US software developers and projects 10% job growth from 2025 to 2035. Indeed Hiring Lab shows software postings up 14% year over year in April 2026, with more than 47% of them mentioning AI, while Stanford Digital Economy Lab researchers find early-career employment in AI-exposed occupations has fallen behind other groups.

AI coding tools moved from trial to daily routine between 2025 and 2026. Stack Overflow finds 73% of its 2026 respondents use coding assistants and agents daily, JetBrains puts regular use at 85%, DORA at 90%, and GitHub reports that more than 40% of pull requests began with an agent's draft by September 2026. Sonar's respondents estimate AI already writes 42% of committed code.

Trust and measured results lag behind adoption. Only 29% of Stack Overflow's 2025 respondents trusted AI accuracy, 96% of Sonar's respondents do not fully trust AI code, and Veracode found security weaknesses in 45% of AI coding test cases. METR's controlled trial, in which experienced developers worked 19% slower with early-2025 tools, is a reminder that survey-reported productivity gains are perceptions, not measurements.

How many software developers there are

Counting developers depends on the definition. GitHub counts accounts on its platform, which include students, hobbyists and people with more than one account, so its 225 million figure is far larger than any official headcount. Official statistics are narrower: the US Bureau of Labor Statistics counts about 1.7 million employed software developers, and Eurostat counts just over 10 million ICT specialists in the EU, a broader group that also includes IT support, network and database roles. Read the GitHub and survey numbers as signs of where activity is growing, and the BLS and Eurostat numbers as employment counts.

Employment, pay and hiring

Software development remains one of the best paid large occupations in the United States: the BLS median wage of $135,980 in May 2025 is more than 2.5 times the median for all workers. The BLS still projects 10% job growth for software developers, testers and QA analysts from 2025 to 2035. Hiring tells a more cautious story. Indeed reports software postings were up 14% year over year in April 2026 but still roughly 30% below the February 2020 baseline, and Stanford researchers find employment for entry-level workers in AI-exposed occupations has fallen relative to other groups. Those two findings point to a market that is recovering for experienced and AI-focused roles faster than for new graduates.

Work, satisfaction and where the time goes

Developer surveys in 2025 and 2026 describe a workforce that is busy but not especially content. Stack Overflow's 2026 survey finds a third of respondents unhappy at work, and the share working as freelancers or sole proprietors more than doubled in a year. Atlassian's research shows coding takes only a small part of the week, while meetings, searching for information and other friction take much more, which helps explain why faster code generation has not removed the sense of lost time. JetBrains finds most developers doubt that productivity metrics capture their real contribution.

Languages, tools and activity

JavaScript, SQL, HTML/CSS and Python remain the everyday core of developer work, and Stack Overflow's 2026 results show those four within four points of each other. Python's jump in 2025 and TypeScript's lead on GitHub both track AI work: TypeScript added the most monthly contributors on GitHub in the year to September 2026, with Python close behind. Activity on GitHub itself rose sharply as coding agents spread, with pushes and merged pull requests at record highs. Usage shares from surveys and GitHub contributor counts measure different things, so the rankings do not always match.

AI coding assistant adoption

Every major 2025 and 2026 survey puts AI use among developers well above 80%, and the debate has moved from whether developers use AI to how much of the work they hand over. Stack Overflow's 2026 respondents mostly use coding assistants and agents every day, Google's DORA research finds a median of two hours a day with AI, and Sonar estimates AI already accounts for 42% of committed code. GitHub's platform data shows agents starting a large and growing share of pull requests. Survey samples differ: Stack Overflow and JetBrains reach broad developer audiences, DORA surveys technology professionals, and Sonar's sample is about 1,100 professional developers.

Trust, quality and measured productivity

High adoption has not produced high trust. Stack Overflow's 2025 survey recorded trust in AI accuracy at 29%, and Sonar finds almost all developers do not fully trust AI-generated code, yet fewer than half always check it before committing. Independent tests explain some of the caution: Veracode found AI models introduced known security weaknesses in 45% of test cases, and METR's controlled trial found experienced open-source developers took 19% longer with early-2025 AI tools. Perceived productivity is much higher in surveys than in that trial, so self-reported gains should be read as perceptions rather than measured output.

Frequently asked questions

How many software developers are there in the world?

There is no single official count. GitHub reports more than 225 million developers on its platform in 2026, including students and hobbyists. Official employment counts are smaller: the BLS counts about 1.7 million software developers in the US, and Eurostat counts just over 10 million ICT specialists in the EU.

How much do software developers earn in the US?

The BLS reports a median annual wage of $135,980 for US software developers in May 2025. The top 10% earned more than $214,670 and the lowest 10% less than $82,460, and developers at software publishers had a median of $164,550.

Is the software developer job market recovering?

Partly. Indeed Hiring Lab reports US software development postings up 14% year over year in April 2026, though still roughly 30% below their February 2020 level. The BLS projects 10% employment growth from 2025 to 2035, but Stanford research finds early-career workers in AI-exposed occupations have lost ground.

What share of developers use AI coding tools?

Most of them. 73% of 2026 Stack Overflow survey respondents use coding assistants and agents daily, JetBrains reports 85% regular use in 2025, and Google's 2025 DORA research puts AI adoption among software professionals at 90%.

Do developers trust AI-generated code?

Mostly not without checking. Trust in AI accuracy among Stack Overflow respondents fell to 29% in 2025, 96% of developers in Sonar's 2026 survey do not fully trust AI code, and 48% of Stack Overflow's 2026 respondents trust AI only when they can easily verify the output.

What is the most popular programming language?

JavaScript has been the most used language in the Stack Overflow survey for 12 years in a row, used by 62% of 2026 respondents. On GitHub, TypeScript ranks first by contributors and added 3.62 million monthly contributors in the year to September 2026.

Methodology

We used primary sources only: government statistics (BLS, Eurostat), the companies that ran each survey or own the platform data (Stack Overflow, GitHub, JetBrains, Atlassian, Sonar, Google Cloud DORA, CompTIA, Indeed Hiring Lab, Veracode) and research groups (METR, Stanford Digital Economy Lab). Each figure's quote was refetched from the source page and checked. Samples and definitions differ: GitHub counts platform accounts rather than employed developers, Eurostat's ICT specialists include IT roles beyond software development, and developer surveys are opt-in samples that lean toward engaged and English-speaking developers. Survey shares are not directly comparable across publishers because the questions differ.
