AI Chatbot Statistics 2026
About half of U.S. adults (49%) used AI chatbots in February 2026, up from 33% in 2024, and 44% used ChatGPT, according to Pew Research Center. OpenAI reported more than 900 million weekly ChatGPT users in February 2026, and Alphabet reported 950 million monthly Gemini app users in July 2026. In the EU, Eurostat found 32.7% of people aged 16 to 74 used generative AI tools in 2025, and an NBER study found 73% of ChatGPT messages were not related to work by June 2025.

Analysis
This page collects current figures on AI chatbots and assistants such as ChatGPT, Gemini, Copilot, Meta AI and Claude: how many people use them, who those people are, what they ask for, and how far they trust the answers. Most survey data cover U.S. adults and teens in 2025 and 2026, with comparison figures from Eurostat for the EU, a six-country Reuters Institute survey and the Reuters Institute Digital News Report. User counts are company-reported and use different definitions (weekly, monthly, daily or paid users), so they should not be ranked directly against each other.
Chatbot use moved from a minority habit to a mainstream one in about two years. Pew Research Center found that 49% of U.S. adults used AI chatbots in February 2026, against 33% in 2024, and that about a quarter used them daily. ChatGPT remains the default: 44% of U.S. adults used it, well ahead of Gemini, Copilot and Meta AI. Company figures point the same way at global scale. OpenAI reported more than 900 million weekly ChatGPT users and more than 50 million consumer subscribers in February 2026, while Alphabet reported more than 750 million monthly Gemini app users in February 2026 and 950 million in July.
Age is the sharpest divide in the data. Pew found that adults under 50 were about twice as likely as those 50 and older to use ChatGPT (57% vs. 28%), and 64% of U.S. teens reported using chatbots. In the NBER study, users aged 18 to 25 sent about 46% of ChatGPT messages among users who gave their age. The Reuters Institute's six-country survey shows the same pattern: 59% of 18 to 24 year olds used a generative AI tool in the previous week, against 20% of people aged 55 and over. In the EU, Eurostat measured use of generative AI tools at 32.7% of people aged 16 to 74 in 2025.
Most chatbot use is not about work. In the NBER study of ChatGPT conversations, non-work messages rose from 53% to 73% of the total between June 2024 and June 2025, and OpenAI classed 49% of messages as asking for information or advice. Pew's 2026 survey ranks searching for information first, and 38% of employed adults used chatbots for work tasks. Emotional uses remain a small share: Anthropic measured affective conversations at 2.9% of Claude.ai traffic, and 12% of U.S. teens told Pew they had used chatbots for emotional support or advice.
Trust has not kept pace with use. The Reuters Institute put trust in answers from AI chatbots at 20% globally in 2026, compared with 37% for news overall, and weekly use of chatbots for news reached 10% across its markets. Pew found that 40% of U.S. adults who do not use chatbots are not at all likely to start in the next year. In customer service, Gartner found in 2024 that 64% of customers would prefer companies not use AI, even as Gartner predicts AI agents will resolve 80% of common service issues by 2029.
Reach of the largest AI chatbots
These are company-reported user counts, and each company picks its own measure. OpenAI reports weekly active users, Alphabet monthly users, Microsoft a mix of monthly users and paid seats, and Meta reported growth in daily users rather than a total. A monthly figure is always larger than a weekly one for the same product, so the numbers show scale rather than a ranking. Paid conversion is still a small share of use: OpenAI's 50 million consumer subscribers compare with more than 900 million weekly users.

Who uses AI chatbots
Pew Research Center's February 2026 survey of 5,119 U.S. adults is the most direct measure of chatbot use in the U.S. population: about half of adults use chatbots, and about one in four uses them every day. ChatGPT leads every other brand by a wide margin. OpenAI and NBER data on ChatGPT accounts add a global view and show that young adults send a large share of messages and that the early gender gap has closed. Pew changed its question wording in 2026, so part of the jump from 2024 reflects measurement as well as behavior.

What people use chatbots for
Survey answers and conversation logs agree that information seeking and practical advice lead, and that personal use outweighs work use. The NBER study classifies a sample of real ChatGPT messages, which avoids recall bias but covers one product. Pew's survey covers all chatbots but relies on what people report; its full breakdown of uses is in the chart below. Anthropic's figures describe Claude.ai traffic, which leans more toward coding than ChatGPT does, so product mix shapes each data set.

Use outside the U.S. and as a news source
Eurostat's household survey gives an official measure for the EU: about one in three people aged 16 to 74 used generative AI tools in 2025, mostly for personal purposes, with use more than twice as common in Denmark as in Romania. The Reuters Institute surveys add a news angle. Its six-country survey shows weekly use of generative AI nearly doubling in one year, while its Digital News Report finds news is a slower-growing use. Eurostat counts all generative AI tools over three months and the Reuters Institute counts weekly use, so the two measures are not directly comparable.

Teens, young users and AI companions
Teens use chatbots at higher rates than adults, and school is a major reason. Pew's teen survey, conducted in September and October 2025, also shows that parents underestimate their children's use. The Common Sense Media figures cover AI companion apps specifically, a category built for ongoing personal conversation, and are not comparable with general chatbot use. The Stanford AI Index figure is an expert forecast, not a measurement.

Trust, concerns and non-users
Trust in chatbot answers is low compared with use. Reuters Institute data show trust in chatbot news answers below trust in news generally, and brand trust is concentrated in ChatGPT, partly because few people know the other tools well. Among Americans who do not use chatbots, Pew found lack of interest is the top reason, with privacy and accuracy concerns close behind (see the chart below), and most non-users do not expect to start soon.

Chatbots in customer service and banking
Company chatbots are the oldest and most common way consumers meet conversational AI, and they draw more resistance than general assistants. Gartner's 2024 survey shows most customers would rather not deal with AI in service, mainly because they fear losing access to a person, while Gartner forecasts that AI agents will handle most common issues by 2029. Bank of America's Erica shows how large a single bank assistant has become, though its interaction counts are company-reported and include insights Erica sends on its own.

Methodology
We selected figures from the organizations that collected the data: Pew Research Center and Common Sense Media surveys, the Reuters Institute's YouGov surveys, the NBER and Anthropic analyses of conversation data, Gartner surveys, Eurostat's household ICT survey, and user counts published by OpenAI, Alphabet, Meta, Microsoft and Bank of America. Each figure links to the page we quoted, and every quote was rechecked against that page on 2026-11-04. Company user counts are self-reported, use different definitions (weekly active, monthly active, paid seats) and are not audited. Survey figures differ in country, age range, question wording and timing, so compare them within a source rather than across sources. Pew changed its chatbot question in 2026, which affects comparisons with earlier years.
