About half of U.S. adults (49%) used AI chatbots in February 2026, up from 33% in 2024, and 44% used ChatGPT, according to Pew Research Center. OpenAI reported more than 900 million weekly ChatGPT users in February 2026, and Alphabet reported 950 million monthly Gemini app users in July 2026. In the EU, Eurostat found 32.7% of people aged 16 to 74 used generative AI tools in 2025, and an NBER study found 73% of ChatGPT messages were not related to work by June 2025.

About 61% of U.S. adults aged 18 to 64 used generative AI in mid-2026, according to the St. Louis Fed's Real-Time Population Survey, against 33% of EU adults in 2025 per Eurostat. Business use is lower: the Census Bureau put the share of U.S. firms using AI at 19.8% in May 2026, and Eurostat put EU enterprises at 20% in 2025. The Stanford AI Index reports that private AI investment grew 127.5% in 2025, with generative AI taking nearly half.
