Statlyst data desk · updated November 4, 2026
ChatGPT ranks first, with more than 900 million weekly active users reported by OpenAI, a $8 per month Go plan and a $20 per month Plus plan. Google Gemini is the closest alternative, with one billion app users reported by Alphabet and the lowest paid entry at $4.99 per month for Google AI Plus. Meta AI and DeepSeek are free with no paid tier.

Adoption figures come from company filings, official releases or independent surveys, linked in each entry. We compared documented features and published prices; we did not run hands-on tests. Scoring method
This list covers general-purpose AI chatbots available to consumers in the United States as of November 2026. Each entry reports a starting price copied from the vendor's own U.S. pricing page and, where one exists, a user figure from a company filing, earnings call or independent survey. Scores weight features 35%, adoption 35% and value 30%. We compared documented features and published prices; we did not run benchmark tests.
AssessmentChatGPT is the top pick on the combination of features and measured adoption, with Pew Research Center finding that 44% of U.S. adults have used it. Google Gemini is a close second and the strongest value, since Google AI Plus starts at $4.99 per month and Google AI Pro bundles 5 TB of storage. Microsoft Copilot suits people who already pay for Microsoft 365, Claude stands out for writing and coding work, and Perplexity is the better choice when cited sources matter. Meta AI and DeepSeek cost nothing.

ChatGPT
OpenAI's general-purpose chatbot for writing, analysis, coding, image generation and voice conversations, with free and paid tiers.
9.3overallOpenAI's general-purpose chatbot for writing, analysis, coding, image generation and voice conversations, with free and paid tiers.
Best forPeople who want the most widely used assistant with the broadest feature set and a large base of shared prompts and help material.
Adoption data
900MOpenAI reported more than 900 million weekly active ChatGPT users and more than 50 million consumer subscribers in 2026.
OpenAI, Scaling AI for everyone (2026): “ChatGPT is where people start with AI, with more than 900M weekly active users, and we now have more than 50 million consumer subscribers.”
ChatGPT is the reference point for consumer chatbots. OpenAI's help center describes Plus as a $20 per month plan with priority access at busy times, higher model limits, reasoning options, voice conversations, image generation, file analysis and Deep Research where available. The free plan covers everyday questions with tighter limits, and Go, at $8 per month in the U.S., adds more messages, uploads and image creation but may include ads. The adoption evidence is the strongest in this category: OpenAI reports more than 900 million weekly active users, and Pew Research Center found that 44% of U.S. adults had used ChatGPT, nearly double the share for the next product. That scale matters in practice because tutorials, shared prompts and third-party integrations tend to appear for ChatGPT first. The weak points are predictability and cost control. OpenAI notes that Plus can include message caps under heavy demand, the model lineup shifts during rollouts, and API usage is billed on its own. Buyers who mainly want a cheap entry tier will find Google AI Plus lower on headline price.
Strengths
- +Largest documented user base of any chatbot on this list
- +Plus bundles voice, images, files and research in one $20 plan
- +Sign in with ChatGPT lets eligible Plus users share their allowance with participating tools
Limitations
- −OpenAI says Plus subscriptions may include message caps during high demand
- −API usage is billed separately from the subscription
- −OpenAI's pricing page says the Go plan may include ads
SummaryChatGPT has the widest documented adoption and a complete feature set in its $20 Plus plan. It is the default choice unless price or a specific ecosystem points elsewhere.
- 2

Google Gemini
Google's AI assistant, available free and through Google AI Plus, Pro and Ultra plans that add usage, Google app integration and cloud storage.
9.3overallGoogle's AI assistant, available free and through Google AI Plus, Pro and Ultra plans that add usage, Google app integration and cloud storage.
Best forGoogle account holders who want an assistant inside Gmail, Docs and Chrome, plus cloud storage in the same subscription.
Adoption data
one billionAlphabet said in its third-quarter 2026 earnings message that the Gemini app had reached one billion users.
Alphabet, Alphabet Q3 2026 earnings: CEO remarks (2026): “The Gemini app is now at one billion users and is the fastest-growing product in Google's history.”
Gemini is the strongest value proposition among the large assistants. Google's U.S. subscription page lists a free tier with Deep Research, Gemini Live, Canvas and Gems, then Google AI Plus at $4.99 per month with double the free usage and 400 GB of storage, and Google AI Pro at $19.99 per month with four times the free usage, Gemini in Gmail and Docs, Chrome auto browse and 5 TB of storage. For a household already paying for Google storage, the AI features come close to free. Adoption is comparable to ChatGPT on Alphabet's own figures: the company said the Gemini app reached one billion users in the third quarter of 2026, and Pew Research Center measured 24% of U.S. adults using it. The trade-off is ecosystem dependence. Much of what Pro adds lives inside Google's apps, and the ladder of Plus, Pro and Ultra plans with credits and usage multiples takes some reading to compare against a single flat plan.
Strengths
- +Cheapest paid entry point on this list at $4.99 per month
- +Paid plans bundle Google cloud storage, which offsets part of the cost
- +Free tier already includes Deep Research and Gemini Live
Limitations
- −Most of the value depends on using Gmail, Docs and other Google apps
- −Plan names and feature splits across Plus, Pro and Ultra take time to compare
- −Feature availability varies by country, according to Google's plan pages
SummaryGemini offers the lowest paid entry price among the major assistants and bundles storage that many households already buy. It is the first pick for people who live in Google's apps.
- 3

Microsoft Copilot
Microsoft's AI assistant, free as a standalone app and built into Word, Excel, PowerPoint and Outlook through Microsoft 365 consumer plans.
8.7overallMicrosoft's AI assistant, free as a standalone app and built into Word, Excel, PowerPoint and Outlook through Microsoft 365 consumer plans.
Best forWindows and Microsoft 365 users who want AI help inside Office documents and Outlook.
Adoption data
150 millionMicrosoft said in its fiscal 2026 first-quarter earnings call that its family of Copilot products had passed 150 million monthly active users across work and consumer uses.
Microsoft, Microsoft FY26 Q1 earnings conference call (2025): “And our first party family of Copilots now has surpassed 150 million monthly active users across information work, coding, security, science, health, and consumer.”
Copilot's case rests on where it lives. Microsoft's U.S. plan comparison shows Microsoft 365 Personal at $9.99 per month or $99.99 per year with Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Outlook and OneNote desktop apps, Copilot inside those apps, 1 TB of OneDrive storage and higher usage than the free Copilot app. Microsoft 365 Premium at $19.99 per month raises usage to an extensive level and adds agentic features for research and analysis. For someone who already pays for Office, adding AI costs nothing extra. Microsoft reports that its family of Copilots passed 150 million monthly active users, though that number spans work, coding and security products, and Pew Research Center found 17% of U.S. adults use Copilot. The limits are vaguely documented: plans promise usage that is higher than free rather than a number, and in the Family plan only the subscription owner gets the AI features. As a pure chat tool it is less distinctive than ChatGPT or Gemini.
Strengths
- +Office apps, 1 TB of storage and Copilot in one $9.99 plan
- +Works on the files people already keep in Word and Excel
- +One-month free trial on Microsoft 365 Personal
Limitations
- −Microsoft 365 Personal gives 'higher usage than free' rather than a stated limit
- −In Microsoft 365 Family, AI features are for the subscription owner only
- −Microsoft's 150 million figure covers all Copilot products, not only the consumer chatbot
SummaryCopilot is the practical choice for people who already work in Word, Excel and Outlook, since the AI comes with an Office plan they may already pay for. As a standalone chatbot it is less distinctive than the top two.
- 4

Meta AI
Meta's free assistant built into WhatsApp, Instagram, Facebook and Messenger, with a standalone app and web version.
8.4overallMeta's free assistant built into WhatsApp, Instagram, Facebook and Messenger, with a standalone app and web version.
Best forPeople who want a free assistant inside the messaging apps they already use every day.
Adoption data
a billionMeta said on its second-quarter 2025 earnings call that Meta AI had more than one billion monthly active users across its apps.
Meta Platforms, Meta Q2 2025 earnings call transcript (2025): “The fourth opportunity is Meta AI. Its reach is already quite impressive with more than a billion monthly actives.”
Meta AI reaches people without asking them to install anything new. It sits inside WhatsApp, Instagram, Facebook and Messenger, and Meta also runs a standalone app and the meta.ai website, which the company introduced in April 2025 as a personalized assistant that remembers context and doubles as the companion app for its AI glasses. The meta.ai site lists image generation, photo editing by chat or sketch, local recommendations, shopping comparisons and deep research that produces cited reports. Meta told investors in 2025 that Meta AI had more than one billion monthly active users, and Pew Research Center found 14% of U.S. adults use it, so the gap between reach and deliberate use is wide. The product is free, which makes value high, but it documents fewer tools for working with files, code and long documents than ChatGPT, Gemini or Claude, and it runs under a Meta account.
Strengths
- +Free with no subscription tier to manage
- +Already present in apps with billions of users
- +Photo editing and image creation built in
Limitations
- −Fewer documented tools for files, code and long documents than paid rivals
- −Usage figures are counted across Meta's apps, so active use of the chatbot itself is harder to judge
- −Tied to a Meta account and Meta's data practices
SummaryMeta AI is the easiest free assistant to reach because it already lives in Meta's messaging apps. It suits quick questions and images more than heavy document or coding work.

Claude
Anthropic's assistant for writing, analysis and coding, with Free, Pro, Max and Ultra plans.
8.2overallAnthropic's assistant for writing, analysis and coding, with Free, Pro, Max and Ultra plans.
Best forWriters, analysts and developers who work with long documents or code and want coding tools in the same subscription.
Adoption data
6% of U.S. adultsIn Pew Research Center's 2026 survey, 6% of U.S. adults said they use Claude.
Pew Research Center, Americans and AI 2026: Chatbots, smart devices and views on impact (2026): “Chatbot Percent ChatGPT 44 Gemini 24 Copilot 17 Meta AI 14 Grok 8 Claude 6 Character.ai 3”
Claude is strongest as a work tool. Anthropic's pricing page shows a free plan with web search, file creation, code execution, memory and app connectors, and a Pro plan at $17 per month on annual billing or $20 monthly. Pro adds more usage, scheduled task hand-off, Claude Code, Claude in Chrome and Claude for Microsoft 365 and Outlook. Max at $100 and Ultra at $200 raise limits for people who use it all day. For developers, Claude Code inside the base paid plan is a meaningful extra that rivals often sell separately. Adoption is the weaker side of its score. Pew Research Center found 6% of U.S. adults use Claude, far behind ChatGPT at 44% and Gemini at 24%, so there are fewer shared guides aimed at casual users. Anthropic also states that limits apply every 5 hours and every week and that how fast you reach them depends on model choice, chat length and file size.
Strengths
- +Pro includes Claude Code, a coding agent, at no extra cost
- +Annual Pro billing brings the price to $17 per month
- +Free plan includes search, file creation and code execution
Limitations
- −Usage limits reset every 5 hours and every week, and Anthropic says the pace depends on model and file size
- −Consumer reach is small next to ChatGPT, Gemini and Copilot in Pew's survey
- −Large jump from Pro at $20 to Max at $100
SummaryClaude has one of the deepest feature sets for writing and coding work, and Pro includes Claude Code. Its consumer adoption is much smaller than the leaders, which lowers its overall score here.
- 6

Perplexity
An answer engine that searches the web and cites sources, with access to models from several AI labs on paid plans.
7.9overallAn answer engine that searches the web and cites sources, with access to models from several AI labs on paid plans.
Best forResearchers and readers who want cited answers and the option to switch between models from different labs.
Perplexity approaches the category from search rather than conversation. Each answer is assembled from web results with citations, which makes it easier to check claims than in a general chatbot. The Pro plan, listed at $17 per month on annual billing, adds deep research, more usage and memory, Perplexity Computer for building documents and apps, and the ability to pick between models from OpenAI, Google, Anthropic, xAI, Moonshot AI and Z.ai. That model choice is unusual: one subscription gives access to several labs' systems. Max, at $167 per month on annual billing, targets heavy users with expert-level research and the highest limits. The adoption score is conservative because we found no user count from the company's investor materials or from Pew Research Center's 2026 chatbot survey. Plan comparison also takes care, since the pricing page mixes plan prices with limited-time Computer credit offers.
Strengths
- +Every answer is built around visible sources
- +One subscription covers models from several labs
- +Pro costs $17 per month on annual billing
Limitations
- −No primary adoption figure from the company or an independent survey was found for this list
- −Computer credits and bonus offers add complexity to plan comparison
- −Max at $167 per month is a large step up from Pro
SummaryPerplexity is the best fit for research questions where sources matter, and its Pro plan adds models from several labs. Adoption evidence is thin, so it ranks below the larger assistants.
- 7

Grok
xAI's assistant, available on grok.com and inside X, with tiers that bundle Grok usage and X benefits.
7.7overallxAI's assistant, available on grok.com and inside X, with tiers that bundle Grok usage and X benefits.
Best forHeavy X users who want an assistant tied to their X subscription and real-time posts.
Adoption data
8% of U.S. adultsIn Pew Research Center's 2026 survey, 8% of U.S. adults said they use Grok.
Pew Research Center, Americans and AI 2026: Chatbots, smart devices and views on impact (2026): “Chatbot Percent ChatGPT 44 Gemini 24 Copilot 17 Meta AI 14 Grok 8 Claude 6 Character.ai 3”
Grok is now sold as part of a single subscription that covers xAI's products and X membership. The plans page lists four tiers. Plus includes a shared usage pool across Grok Chat, Voice, Imagine and Build, the Grok API and Cursor, plus fewer timeline ads on X. Premium raises usage fourfold and adds the latest models, image and video creation, cloud agents and code hosting. Super and Ultra raise usage to 15 and 50 times Plus and add 1080p video and priority access. The bundle is attractive for people who already spend time on X, since ad reduction and creator tools come with it. Pew Research Center found 8% of U.S. adults use Grok, ahead of Claude but well behind the leaders. xAI's U.S. pricing page lists Plus at $8 per month, Premium at $30, Super at $100 and Ultra at $200. Plus is cheap, but image and video creation, the latest models and cloud agents start at Premium, and usage is described as multiples of Plus rather than as stated limits.
Strengths
- +One subscription covers Grok products and X benefits
- +Higher tiers include 1080p video generation
- +Tiered usage multiples are stated plainly (4x, 15x, 50x Plus)
Limitations
- −Plus is an introductory tier, and most AI features listed for Premium start at $30 per month
- −Usage is described as multiples of Plus rather than stated limits
- −Most of the extra value assumes regular use of X
SummaryGrok makes most sense as part of an X subscription, with strong image and video tools from the $30 Premium tier. The $8 Plus tier is a low entry price, but the most useful AI features sit higher up.
- 8

DeepSeek
A free chatbot from the Chinese lab DeepSeek, with DeepThink reasoning and web search, plus a pay-per-use API.
7.5overallA free chatbot from the Chinese lab DeepSeek, with DeepThink reasoning and web search, plus a pay-per-use API.
Best forCost-conscious users and developers who want a capable free assistant or low-cost API access.
DeepSeek is the cheapest way to get a capable reasoning model. The company's site offers free chat on the web and in mobile and desktop apps, with a DeepThink mode for step-by-step reasoning and a search option, and lists an API platform billed per use that now supports web search and fetch. The site says its V4.1 Flash model was recently updated for faster, cheaper project work. There is no consumer subscription to compare, which gives it a high value score. The feature set is narrower than the large assistants: the site documents chat, reasoning and search, but not the voice, image, file and app integration tools that ChatGPT, Gemini and Copilot describe. We found no user figure from DeepSeek or from Pew Research Center's 2026 chatbot survey, so adoption is scored conservatively. Organizations should also check internal rules before use, since DeepSeek is based in China and some employers and agencies restrict its apps.
Strengths
- +Chat is free with no subscription tier
- +DeepThink reasoning is available without paying
- +API offers a low-cost route for developers
Limitations
- −Fewer documented features for files, images and voice than the large assistants
- −No primary adoption figure from the company or an independent survey was found for this list
- −Data is processed by a company based in China, which some employers restrict
SummaryDeepSeek gives free access to a reasoning model and cheap API pricing for developers. Its narrower documented feature set and unclear adoption data place it in the lower half of this list.
- 9

Mistral Vibe (formerly Le Chat)
Mistral AI's assistant and coding agent, renamed from Le Chat, with Free, Pro, Team and Enterprise plans.
7.3overallMistral AI's assistant and coding agent, renamed from Le Chat, with Free, Pro, Team and Enterprise plans.
Best forEuropean buyers and teams that care about data residency and want chat and coding in one low-cost plan.
Mistral's assistant, renamed from Le Chat to Mistral Vibe, combines chat and coding in one product. The pricing page lists a free plan with limited messages, basic image generation, limited coding sessions and more than 100 connectors. Pro, at $14.99 per month or $5.99 for verified students, adds more messages and web searches, faster responses, all-day coding in the command line, IDE or web, spreadsheet and slide generation and API credits. Team costs $24.99 per user per month with up to 30 GB of storage per user and data export. Mistral pitches the product on control: its product page highlights fine-tuned models, agents and full data residency in any cloud or data center, which appeals to European organizations. The weak point for this list is reach. We found no user figure from Mistral or from Pew Research Center's 2026 survey, and the recent rename means guides written for Le Chat may not match the current interface.
Strengths
- +Pro at $14.99 per month covers both chat and coding
- +Student price of $5.99 per month
- +Enterprise options include private deployments and data residency
Limitations
- −Recent rename from Le Chat to Vibe may confuse existing users
- −No primary adoption figure from the company or an independent survey was found for this list
- −Smaller consumer ecosystem than the U.S. assistants
SummaryMistral Vibe is a low-cost plan that covers both chat and coding, with data residency options that suit European teams. Limited adoption evidence keeps it at the bottom of this ranking.
Choosing a product
- Start with the apps you already use
- Gemini works inside Gmail and Docs, Copilot inside Word, Excel and Outlook, and Meta AI inside WhatsApp and Instagram. An assistant that sits where your files and messages already are usually gets more use than a better one in a separate tab.
- Compare paid tiers on usage, not only price
- Most plans describe limits as multiples of the free tier (Gemini Plus at 2x, Pro at 4x) or as caps that reset over time (Claude every 5 hours and every week). OpenAI notes that ChatGPT Plus may include message caps at busy times. Check what happens when you hit a limit before paying for a year.
- Check what else the subscription includes
- Some plans bundle other services: Google AI Pro includes 5 TB of storage, Microsoft 365 Personal includes Office apps and 1 TB of OneDrive, and Grok tiers include X benefits. If you already pay for one of these, the effective cost of the AI can be close to zero.
- Weigh adoption as a practical signal
- Large user bases mean more tutorials, shared prompts and third-party integrations. Pew Research Center's 2026 survey found 44% of U.S. adults use ChatGPT, 24% Gemini, 17% Copilot, 14% Meta AI, 8% Grok and 6% Claude.
- Review data and workplace rules
- Employers often limit which assistants staff can use with company data. Check whether your organization allows a given product, and read each vendor's data controls, before uploading work files.
