Analysis
This page collects measured figures on who uses social media, which platforms they use, how often, and what they use it for. It covers worldwide audience estimates from Kepios and GWI, company-reported user counts from quarterly filings and earnings calls, US adult and teen surveys, European official statistics and international news-use research. Most figures describe 2025 and 2026; the CDC teen measures come from the 2023 Youth Risk Behavior Survey, the latest available, and are labeled as such.
Social media now reaches about two in three people on Earth. Kepios puts active user identities at 5.66 billion in October 2025, up 259 million in a year, and those identities equal 93.8 percent of all internet users. Company reports show the scale of individual networks: Meta's apps had 3.64 billion daily active people in September 2026, Instagram passed 2 billion daily users and Threads 500 million monthly users, Snap averaged 493 million daily users in the second quarter of 2026, and Pinterest reported a record 661 million monthly users in the third quarter.
In the United States, platform use has settled into a stable order. Pew Research Center's 2025 survey of 5,022 adults found YouTube at 84% and Facebook at 71%, with TikTok at 37%, up from 21% in 2021. Edison Research finds TikTok is now the platform used most by Americans ages 12 to 34, while Facebook is the most-used platform for 40% of social media users. Worldwide, GWI finds online adults use an average of 6.75 platforms a month, so reach figures for single networks overlap heavily.
Teen use is near universal and heavy. Pew finds 21% of US teens are on TikTok almost constantly and 36% are almost constantly on at least one of five major platforms. CDC data from 2023 show 77.0% of US high school students use social media at least several times a day. GWI puts average time on social and video feeds at 18 hours and 36 minutes a week for online adults, and more than 25 hours for women aged 16 to 24. Attitudes have shifted: 48% of teens said in 2024 that social media has a mostly negative effect on people their age, up from 32% in 2022, and Australia has begun enforcing a minimum age of 16, with platforms removing access to 4.7 million under-16 accounts.
Social platforms are also a main news channel. Pew reports 59% of US adults get news from social media at least sometimes in 2026, led by Facebook at 40% and YouTube at 34%. Across 48 markets, the Reuters Institute finds social media and video networks became the most widely used way to access online news in 2026 (54%), 30% of people name them as their main news source, and TikTok news use reached 20%.
Global reach of social media
Worldwide totals come from two kinds of data. Kepios builds a single estimate of social media user identities from platform advertising reach, which can include duplicate or non-human accounts, so it overstates unique people somewhat. Company filings and earnings calls report each platform's own active-user definition, such as Meta's daily active people or Reddit's daily active uniques, and these cannot be added together because most people use several networks. Read together, they show a market that is still growing in absolute terms, mostly outside North America, though Kepios measures slower monthly growth than in earlier years.

Which platforms people use
Pew Research Center measures platform reach as the share of US adults who say they ever use each site. YouTube and Facebook remain the only platforms used by a clear majority, but TikTok, Instagram, WhatsApp and Reddit have gained since 2021. Edison Research asks a different question, the platform people use most, which favors TikTok among younger Americans and Facebook among older ones. GWI and the Reuters Institute add a global view: nearly all internet users aged 16 and over use social platforms, and the average adult uses several each month.

Teens and time spent
Teen figures come from two survey programs with different designs: Pew Research Center's online teen panel (ages 13 to 17, 2025) and the CDC's Youth Risk Behavior Survey of high school students (2023, the latest available). Both point to near-universal use, with a large minority on at least one platform almost constantly. GWI's time estimates cover online adults aged 16 and over across many countries and are self-reported, so they describe intensity rather than exact screen time.

Wellbeing, attitudes and age limits
Teen opinion about social media turned more negative between 2022 and 2024 even as use held steady, and girls are more likely than boys to report harm. Research on outcomes points to patterns of compulsive use rather than total time as the stronger warning sign. Governments have started to act, with Australia's minimum age of 16 the first national rule of its kind; early compliance data count accounts, not individual children.

Social media as a news source
News use is where social platforms have gained most clearly against traditional outlets. Pew's US data and the Reuters Institute's 48-market survey use different questions, regular news use on a named platform versus weekly use of social and video networks for news, but both show Facebook and YouTube in the lead and video-led apps growing. The rise of a group who rely only on social feeds matters for how news reaches people, since most of that exposure is incidental.

Frequently asked questions
How many people use social media worldwide?
Kepios estimates 5.66 billion active social media user identities in October 2025, equal to 68.7 percent of the world's population. The count is based on platform ad reach and may include some duplicate accounts, so the number of unique people is somewhat lower.
What is the most used social media platform in the US?
YouTube. Pew Research Center's 2025 survey found 84% of US adults use it, followed by Facebook at 71%. Edison Research's 2026 survey finds Facebook is still the platform used most often by 40% of US social media users, while TikTok leads among those ages 12 to 34.
How much time do teens spend on social media?
Pew Research Center found in 2025 that 36% of US teens are almost constantly on at least one major platform and 21% are on TikTok almost constantly. Among all online adults, GWI puts time on social and video feeds at 18 hours and 36 minutes a week, rising to 25 hours and 45 minutes for women aged 16 to 24.
How many Americans get news from social media?
59% of US adults get news from social media at least sometimes, according to Pew Research Center's 2026 fact sheet. Facebook (40%) and YouTube (34%) are the most common platforms for regular news use. Across 48 markets, the Reuters Institute found 54% use social media and video networks to access online news.
Is social media use still growing?
Yes, but slowly in mature markets. Kepios counted 259 million more user identities in October 2025 than a year earlier, growth of 4.8 percent. Pinterest's US and Canada audience grew 4% in the year to Q3 2026 while its Rest of World audience grew 13%.
Methodology
We selected figures from the organizations that collected the data: national surveys by Pew Research Center and Edison Research, government surveys by the CDC and Eurostat, company filings with the US Securities and Exchange Commission and earnings calls, GWI's global survey as published in the Kepios Digital 2026 reports, and the Reuters Institute's 48-market survey. Kepios figures are its own estimates built from platform advertising reach, which can include duplicate and non-human accounts. Company user metrics follow each company's definition and should not be summed. Survey results depend on question wording and mode: Pew changed survey modes in 2023 and 2024, so long-run trends cross a method break. The CDC teen figures from 2023 are the latest available from that survey. Pew's fact sheets are updated in place, so we cite an archived copy of the version we checked. Every quote was checked against the source page on the update date.
