Analysis
This page collects figures on podcast audiences, video podcasts and platforms, news podcasts, advertising, and the UK and Canadian markets. Most data describe the United States in 2025 and 2026, from national surveys by Edison Research, Pew Research Center, Sounds Profitable and Signal Hill Insights, with platform and company figures from YouTube, Triton Digital, Spotify and iHeartMedia. A final section uses RAJAR, the UK audio measurement body, and Triton Digital's Canadian report.
Podcasting has become a mass medium in the US. Edison Research found that 80% of Americans aged 12 and older have ever listened to or watched a podcast, 58% did so in the past month and 45% in the past week, all record highs in its 2026 survey. Sounds Profitable's survey of adults, fielded in August 2026, shows a similar picture with 74% ever and 55% monthly, and describes the audience as essentially unchanged from 2025, so growth may be leveling off.
Video is the main change in how podcasts are consumed. YouTube counts more than 1 billion monthly viewers of podcast content, and Edison found 57% of Americans have both listened to and watched a podcast. Sounds Profitable reports that 44% of podcast consumers watched a video podcast in the past week, and Triton Digital finds 80% of monthly podcast consumers both watch and listen. Audio remains central, though: only 7% only watch, according to Triton, and RAJAR found 62% of UK podcast users would consume the same content if it were audio only.
Podcasts are a growing source of news. Pew Research Center found 32% of US adults got news from podcasts at least sometimes in 2025, up from 22% in 2020, and most podcast news consumers trust it as much as or more than other news. Across markets, the Reuters Institute measured weekly news podcast use at 11% globally in 2026, with the US among the highest at 15% in 2025.
For advertisers, podcasts take a meaningful share of listening time and money is following. Edison's Share of Ear data, published by Nielsen, put podcasts at 19% of daily ad-supported audio time for adults, behind radio at 64%. iHeartMedia reported podcast revenue of $162.1 million in Q2 2026, up 20.7% from a year earlier, and Sounds Profitable found 39% of podcast consumers made a podcast-ad-driven purchase in three months.
How many people listen to podcasts
Edison Research's Infinite Dial is the longest-running US measure of podcast reach and now counts both listening and watching. Its 2026 figures are record highs on every reach measure. Sounds Profitable surveys adults only and found little change from 2025, so the two sources together suggest a large audience that grew strongly through 2025 and is now stabilizing. Edison's sample covers ages 12 and older; Sounds Profitable's covers ages 18 and older.

Who listens and why
Pew Research Center's surveys of US adults show listening concentrated among younger adults but growing in older groups: the share of adults 50 to 64 who listened in the past year rose from 42% in 2022 to 50% in 2025. Edison Research finds men somewhat more likely than women to listen monthly. Signal Hill Insights' quarterly survey of monthly podcast consumers shows the audience's party identification shifting toward Republicans since 2022, to an even three-way split in 2025.

Video podcasts and platforms
YouTube has become the largest podcast platform by reach, and video consumption keeps rising, while dedicated podcast apps lose share. Survey evidence also shows that most people move between formats rather than abandoning audio: Triton Digital finds 80% of US monthly podcast consumers both watch and listen, and only 7% only watch. Podcasts as a news source
Pew's annual tracking shows news use of podcasts rising in the US since 2020, with adults under 50 far more likely to get news this way. Trust in podcast news is broadly similar to trust in other sources, though Republicans are about twice as likely as Democrats to trust podcasts more. The Reuters Institute's international survey puts the US among the heaviest users of news podcasts, while global use has been flat. Few people pay directly for news podcasts.

Podcast advertising and creator income
Podcasts take about a fifth of the time US adults spend with ad-supported audio, and Nielsen's brand impact studies show lifts in awareness after exposure to podcast ads. iHeartMedia's podcast revenue grew 20.7% in Q2 2026, far faster than its total revenue. Survey work by Sounds Profitable finds that a minority of heavy-spending listeners drives most of the purchases people attribute to podcast ads. Platforms are adding direct fan payments, such as Spotify's Memberships, as a second income stream for creators.

Podcasts in the UK and Canada
RAJAR, which measures radio and audio in the UK, finds podcasts reach about a quarter of the population each week, well below live radio but with long listening sessions among those who tune in. Its autumn 2026 survey also confirms the US pattern of rising video use alongside a strong audio base. In Canada, Triton Digital's 2026 report counts 46% of adults as monthly podcast consumers, with YouTube the most-used platform but Apple Podcasts still leading RSS downloads. Differences in method mean the UK weekly reach and Canadian monthly reach figures are not directly comparable with Edison's US figures.

How popular are podcasts in Canada?

Methodology
Figures come from national surveys (Edison Research, Pew Research Center, Sounds Profitable, Signal Hill Insights, Cumulus Media and Signal Hill Insights, RAJAR), the Reuters Institute's multi-country survey, Triton Digital's US and Canadian podcast reports, Nielsen's advertising research, iHeartMedia's quarterly SEC filing and company statements from YouTube and Spotify, each copied from the publisher's page. Reach measures differ: Edison surveys Americans aged 12 and older and counts both listening and watching, Pew and Sounds Profitable survey adults, and Pew asks about the past 12 months rather than the past month. Platform figures use each company's own definitions, such as YouTube's count of monthly viewers of podcast content. iHeartMedia's revenue covers one company, not the whole market. We did not find a primary source for 2025 total US podcast advertising revenue that could be verified, so this page does not report a market total.
