Analysis
This page collects figures on the cloud computing market: how large it is and how fast it is growing, which providers hold the most share, what Amazon, Microsoft, Alphabet and Oracle report for cloud revenue, backlog and capital spending, how many businesses use cloud services by country and firm size, and how much cloud spend organizations say they waste. Market and company figures describe 2025 and 2026 worldwide. Adoption figures come from official surveys in the EU, the UK and Canada; the Canadian figure is from 2023, the latest available.
The cloud market is growing faster in 2026 than at any time in the last eight years. Synergy Research Group estimates enterprise spending on cloud infrastructure services at $167.7 billion in Q3 2026, up 55% year over year, with trailing 12-month revenue of $558 billion. Omdia, using a narrower definition, measured $110.9 billion in Q4 2025 and forecast 27% growth for 2026. IDC's wider count, which includes software as a service, puts total public cloud spending above $1 trillion in 2026.
Amazon Web Services remains the largest provider, but its share is falling as Microsoft and Google grow faster. Synergy puts Amazon at 26%, Microsoft at 19% and Google at 16% in Q3 2026. Company filings show the same pattern: AWS sales grew 39% to $46.0 billion, Azure revenue grew 48%, and Google Cloud revenue more than doubled to $30.7 billion. Oracle's infrastructure revenue grew 121%, and Oracle, Microsoft and Alphabet each report contracted backlogs between about $560 billion and $680 billion.
That growth rests on record capital spending. Amazon expects about $220 billion of cash capital expenditures in 2026, Microsoft's quarterly additions to property and equipment rose by $20.0 billion in a year, and Gartner forecasts data center systems spending of $879 billion in 2026, up 73.8%. Synergy estimates that AI-specific services already make up about one-third of the cloud infrastructure market.
Business adoption is broad but uneven. Eurostat finds 52.74% of EU enterprises paid for cloud services in 2025, from 84.67% of large firms to 49.3% of small ones, and from 79.21% in Finland to 17.83% in Bulgaria. In the UK, 60% of large businesses use a public cloud provider against 30% of sole traders. Cost control is the main complaint: Flexera's 2026 respondents estimate 29% of cloud spend is wasted, and 98% of FinOps teams surveyed by the FinOps Foundation now manage AI spend.
Cloud market size and growth
Every major tracker shows the cloud market growing faster in 2026 than at any point in the last eight years, but they measure different things. Synergy Research Group and Omdia count spending on infrastructure services (IaaS, PaaS and hosted private cloud), which reached about $168 billion a quarter by Q3 2026. IDC's figure above $1 trillion includes software as a service, so it is roughly double the infrastructure-only estimates. Gartner's country forecasts show the same acceleration in India and Australia. Read the figures as separate series rather than adding them together.

Cloud provider market share
Amazon Web Services still holds the largest share of cloud infrastructure spending, but its lead has narrowed as Microsoft and Google grow faster. Synergy puts Amazon at 26% in Q3 2026, down from 28% in Q2, while Google rose to 16%. Omdia's Q4 2025 shares are higher for AWS because it uses a narrower definition of the market that excludes some platform services. Flexera's survey measures something different: how many enterprises run workloads on each provider, which is why most use more than one.

Hyperscaler cloud revenue and backlog
Company filings give the most precise view of the largest providers, though each defines its cloud segment differently. Microsoft Cloud includes Microsoft 365 and Dynamics, Google Cloud includes Workspace, and AWS is infrastructure and platform services only. The contracted backlogs reported by Microsoft, Alphabet and Oracle, each above $600 billion or close to it, are far larger than current annual revenue and are concentrated in AI capacity deals. Backlog is revenue still to be recognized, not cash received.

Hyperscaler capital spending
The cloud market's growth is being funded by record capital spending on data centers, servers and AI chips. Amazon expects about $220 billion of cash capital expenditures in 2026, and Microsoft's quarterly property additions rose by $20 billion in a year. Gartner expects data center systems spending to grow faster than any other IT segment in 2026 and 2027. Capital spending figures cover all of each company's operations, not cloud alone, though the filings tie most of the increase to AI infrastructure.

Business cloud adoption by country and firm size
Official surveys show that about half of businesses with 10 or more employees in the EU and Canada buy cloud services, and that use rises steeply with firm size. Eurostat's 2025 survey finds 84.67% of large EU enterprises paying for cloud against 49.3% of small ones, and the gap between Finland and Bulgaria is more than 60 percentage points. The UK survey from the Department for Science, Innovation and Technology covers all businesses including sole traders, so its rates are lower. Canada's latest figure is from 2023.

Cloud spend waste and cost management
Practitioner surveys show cloud cost control remains the top problem even as spending grows. Flexera's 2026 respondents estimate 29% of IaaS and PaaS spend is wasted, the first rise in five years, which they link to AI workloads. The FinOps Foundation finds nearly every cost management team now tracks AI spend. These are vendor and community surveys of larger organizations, not representative samples of all businesses, and waste is self-estimated.

Methodology
We used market estimates from research firms (Synergy Research Group, Omdia, IDC, Gartner), company earnings releases and quarterly reports filed with the U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission (Amazon, Microsoft, Alphabet, Oracle), official business surveys (Eurostat, the UK Department for Science, Innovation and Technology, Statistics Canada) and practitioner surveys (Flexera, the FinOps Foundation, the Cloud Native Computing Foundation). Each quote was rechecked against its source on 2026-11-06. Market trackers define the cloud market differently: Synergy and Omdia count infrastructure and platform services, while IDC includes software as a service, so their totals should not be compared directly. Company cloud segments are not like for like, and capital spending covers each company as a whole. Eurostat covers enterprises with 10 or more employees, while the UK survey includes sole traders. The Canadian figure dates from 2023. Flexera, FinOps Foundation and CNCF results come from self-selected respondents at mostly larger organizations, and cloud waste is self-estimated.
