Analysis
This page collects current figures on how many businesses start, how many survive, and how much venture capital flows to young companies. Most figures describe the United States in 2025 and 2026, with sections on the UK, the EU and global venture markets. Business formation data come from statistical offices; funding data come from the two main private market databases, PitchBook and Crunchbase, which use different definitions and should not be added together.
Business formation in the United States remains high by historical standards. The Census Bureau recorded 531,728 business applications in August 2026, including 145,387 high-propensity applications that are most likely to turn into employer firms, and it projects 28,501 new employer businesses from that single month of filings. The Kauffman Foundation measured a rate of 0.36% of adults becoming new entrepreneurs each month in 2025, and 83.3% of them started out of opportunity rather than necessity.
Survival is the harder test. BLS data show 78.9% of establishments that opened in the year to March 2025 were still operating a year later, 47.2% of the 2021 cohort reached five years, and only 34.2% of establishments opened in 2016 reached ten years. The pattern is similar abroad: the ONS reports a 38.4% five-year survival rate for UK businesses born in 2019. These figures cover all new establishments, not only venture-backed startups, so they describe the typical small business rather than a technology company.
Venture capital tells a different story. PitchBook and NVCA counted $515.8 billion of US deal value through Q3 2026, already 44% above the full-year record set in 2021, while KPMG put global venture funding at $728.3 billion and Crunchbase at $679 billion for the same period. The money is concentrated: AI companies took 82.7% of US deal value, a record 27 companies raised rounds of $1 billion or more in Q3 according to Crunchbase, and the San Francisco Bay Area alone drew 24% of global investment.
Below the headline totals, conditions are mixed. Crunchbase reports North American deal counts fell 16% year over year in Q3 2026 to the lowest level since 2023, and PitchBook-NVCA finds that funds of $500 million or more took 78.1% of the capital raised by US venture funds. PitchBook-NVCA counts a record 992 active US unicorns worth $5.7 trillion combined. For small employer firms, the Federal Reserve Banks' survey shows 42% of financing applicants received the full amount they asked for.
New business formation in the US
Census business applications count filings for an Employer Identification Number, so they include many sole proprietorships that never hire. The high-propensity and planned-wage series are the better guide to future employers, and the projected formations figure is the Census estimate of how many of a month's applications will make payroll within a year. Kauffman's rate of new entrepreneurs comes from household survey data and captures people starting any business. SBA Office of Advocacy counts rely on 2022 Census data and define a small business as one with fewer than 500 employees.

How many new businesses survive
BLS Business Employment Dynamics tracks establishments, not firms, so a new branch of an existing company counts as an opening. Even so, the survival curve is consistent across cohorts: roughly one in five new establishments closes in the first year and about half are gone within five years. Kauffman's early survival rate of 77.9% is close to the BLS one-year figure. UK and EU survival measures use business registers and different definitions of activity, which limits direct comparison.

Venture capital investment in 2026
2026 is a record year for venture dollars on every major dataset, driven by very large rounds for AI companies. PitchBook-NVCA covers US deals, while KPMG and Crunchbase cover global deals, and each uses different rules for what counts as venture, so their totals differ. Q3 2026 was weaker than the first half: US deal value fell about 40% from Q2, though the number of deals stayed high. Recent quarters are preliminary and are often revised upward as more rounds are reported.

Funding stages, deal counts and exits
Stage and size data show where the record totals come from. Late-stage rounds absorbed $105 billion of global funding in Q3 2026, and KPMG counted 14 rounds above $1.5 billion in the quarter. Deal counts in North America are falling even as dollars rise, which means fewer companies are raising money in larger amounts, although first-time financings in the US are on a record pace. Fundraising by venture firms is concentrated in the largest funds, and a record number of unicorns remain private.

Business births and deaths in the UK, EU and worldwide
Outside the US, official registers show steady business creation. The UK birth rate held at 11.1% in 2024 while the death rate fell to 9.8%, and the EU recorded 3.5 million new enterprises with a birth rate of 10.4%. Companies House data count incorporations of limited companies, a narrower group than ONS business births, and quarterly strike-offs can swing with administrative processing. Financing and AI use at small employer firms
The Small Business Credit Survey is a convenience sample of employer firms weighted to match the US small business population, fielded in late 2025. It shows that full approval is far from certain: 42% of applicants got everything they asked for and 22% got nothing. Online fintech lenders are a growing share of where firms apply, and nearly half of firms already use AI tools in some form.

Deal counts are falling even as dollars rise. Crunchbase reports North American deal counts fell 16% year over year in Q3 2026 to the lowest level since 2023. First rounds are still getting done: PitchBook-NVCA counted an estimated 8,625 first-time US financings through Q3 2026, already above the 2021 full-year record.
Methodology
We selected figures from statistical agencies (U.S. Census Bureau, BLS, ONS, Eurostat, Companies House), the SBA Office of Advocacy, the Federal Reserve Banks, the Kauffman Foundation and GEM, and from venture databases and reports: PitchBook-NVCA, KPMG's Venture Pulse (which uses PitchBook data) and Crunchbase. Each figure links to the page we quoted and was checked against that page on 2026-11-04. Census business application figures come from the archived August 2026 release, the latest month with a permanent URL, and PitchBook-NVCA figures from the dated Q3 2026 report. Definitions differ: Census counts tax ID applications, BLS counts establishments, ONS and Eurostat count enterprises on business registers, and venture databases count disclosed funding rounds. Venture totals for recent quarters are preliminary. SBA small business counts use 2022 Census data, the latest available.
