Analysis

This page brings together figures on gig, platform and independent work: how many people do it, who they are, what they earn, how stable that income is and how large the main platforms have become. Most figures describe the United States in 2025 and 2026, drawing on the Federal Reserve's household surveys, MBO Partners' State of Independence research and company filings with the SEC. The BLS Contingent Worker Supplement from July 2023 is included as the latest official benchmark, and a final section covers platform work worldwide and in the EU.

The size of the gig economy depends on the definition. The BLS counted 11.9 million independent contractors in their main job in July 2023, 7.4% of US employment. MBO Partners, counting anyone with independent income, puts the figure at a record 74.9 million Americans in 2026, with full-time independents up 114% since 2020 and now 22% of full-time workers. The two numbers answer different questions about main jobs versus any independent income.

For most people gig work is a side activity. The Federal Reserve found 20% of US adults did a gig activity in a month of 2024, mostly selling items, while only 4% did tasks arranged through an app or website. Only 21% of gig workers called it their main job and 70% spent under five hours a week on it. MBO Partners found 36% of traditional employees also had side gigs in 2025.

Income instability is the main cost. In 2025, 58% of self-employed adults told the Federal Reserve their income varied month to month, against 28% of employees, and in 2024 61% of app-based task workers wished their gig pay were more consistent. Full-time contingent workers earned a median $838 a week in 2023, 74% of noncontingent pay, and only 19.9% had employer health insurance. Yet 80.3% of independent contractors preferred their arrangement in 2023, and 78% of independents in MBO's 2026 survey planned to stay independent.

Platforms report large and diverging numbers. DoorDash said over 9 million people delivered in 2025, earning over $20 billion, Uber completed 4.1 billion trips in the third quarter of 2026 and Lyft a record 262 million rides in the second quarter. Freelance marketplaces are flatter: Upwork's gross services volume held at $4.0 billion in 2025 with active clients down 6%, and Fiverr's active buyers fell 25.8%. Worldwide, the ILO counted at least 653 active labour platforms in October 2025 and adopted Convention No. 193 on platform work in June 2026.

Size of the independent workforce

Estimates of the independent workforce depend on the definition used. The Bureau of Labor Statistics counts people whose main job is independent contracting, 11.9 million in its latest survey from July 2023. MBO Partners counts anyone who earns some income independently and arrives at 74.9 million for 2026, with full-time independents growing fastest. The BLS survey is the official benchmark but is run only every few years; MBO's figures come from an annual online survey and are not directly comparable.

Who does gig work and how much

Gig work is common as a side activity and rare as a main job. The Federal Reserve found 20% of US adults did some gig activity in a month of 2024, mostly selling items or doing short tasks, yet only 21% of them called it their main job and 70% spent under five hours a week on it. Younger workers are far more likely to be in gig or contingent work. MBO Partners finds that 36% of traditional employees also have side gigs, a broader definition than the Federal Reserve's.

Pay and benefits

Independent and contingent work pays unevenly. Full-time contingent workers earned 74% of what noncontingent workers earned in 2023 and were far less likely to have employer health insurance, according to the BLS. At the other end, MBO Partners counts 5.8 million independents earning more than $100,000 in 2026. Platforms pay out large totals, with DoorDash reporting over $20 billion in Dasher earnings in 2025, but totals spread across millions of mostly part-time workers say little about hourly pay.

Income stability, flexibility and preferences

Flexibility is the main draw and income instability the main cost. The Federal Reserve found in 2025 that 58% of self-employed adults had income that varied month to month, against 28% of employees, and 61% of app-based task workers in 2024 wanted steadier gig pay. Most independent contractors still prefer their arrangement, and 78% of independents in MBO Partners' 2026 survey plan to stay independent. Contingent workers, whose jobs are expected to end, are more likely to want a permanent job.

Platform work worldwide and regulation

Global counts remain rough. The ILO identified at least 653 active digital labour platforms in October 2025, fewer than in 2021 because of closures and mergers, and says survey data are still too thin to count platform workers reliably. The EU adopted its Platform Work Directive in 2024 to correct misclassification, citing earlier Commission estimates of 28 million EU platform workers, and in June 2026 the ILO adopted Convention No. 193, the first international labour standard for the platform economy. Expectations of growth remain high among employers.

The Federal Reserve found 20% of adults did some gig activity in a month of 2024.

Is gig work a main job for most gig workers?

How much do gig and contingent workers earn?

Full-time contingent workers had median weekly earnings of $838 in July 2023, 74% of the $1,137 earned by noncontingent workers, according to the BLS. MBO Partners estimates 5.8 million independent professionals earned more than $100,000 in 2026, and DoorDash reported more than 9 million Dashers earned over $20 billion combined in 2025.

Is gig and self-employed income stable?

Less than wages. The Federal Reserve found 58% of self-employed adults had income that varied month to month in 2025, against 28% of employees. In 2024, 61% of people doing short tasks through an app or website wished their gig pay were more consistent.

Do gig workers get benefits?

Most do not get employer benefits. The BLS found 19.9% of contingent workers had employer-provided health insurance in July 2023, compared with 51.2% of noncontingent workers.

How many gig platforms are there worldwide?

The ILO identified at least 653 active digital labour platforms in October 2025, down from 777 in 2021 after closures and mergers. Online web-based platforms were the largest group at 204, followed by delivery platforms at 195.

Methodology

We used official statistics (BLS, Federal Reserve Board), international institutions (ILO, World Bank, European Parliament citing European Commission analysis), MBO Partners' annual State of Independence surveys and company filings submitted to the SEC. Each figure links to the page we quoted, checked on 2026-11-04. The most recent BLS Contingent Worker Supplement is from July 2023 and the Federal Reserve's detailed gig module is from its 2024 survey; both are the latest available national benchmarks and are labeled with their years. MBO Partners uses a broad definition of independent work and an online survey, so its counts are much higher than official figures. Company metrics such as trips, orders, Dashers, shoppers, sellers or hosts are not comparable with each other or with survey counts of workers.
