Household Debt Statistics 2026

US household debt totaled $18.8 trillion in Q2 2026, including $13.1 trillion in mortgages, according to the Federal Reserve Bank of New York, and 4.7% of it was delinquent. Relative to income, debt is low: the Federal Reserve puts household debt at 0.90 times disposable income, near its lowest since the late 1990s, while Canadian debt stands at 176.4% of income.

Analysis

This page covers how much households owe, what kinds of debt they hold, how well they keep up with payments and how US borrowing compares with Canada, the UK, the EU and Australia. Most figures describe the United States in 2025 and 2026, drawn from Federal Reserve data, the Census Bureau and credit bureau data from TransUnion and Experian. Student loans and credit cards appear here only briefly, since both have their own pages on this site.

American households owed $18.8 trillion at the end of June 2026, according to the New York Fed, a total that barely moved during the quarter. Mortgages account for $13.1 trillion of it, followed by auto loans at $1.71 trillion, student loans at $1.65 trillion and credit cards at $1.26 trillion. Home equity lines of credit stood at $459 billion, $142 billion above their 2022 low, and TransUnion counts a record $281 billion in unsecured personal loans as borrowers consolidate costlier debt.

Debt has grown more slowly than income. The Federal Reserve's Financial Accounts put household debt at 0.90 times disposable income in Q2 2026, near the lowest ratio since the late 1990s. The 2025 Survey of Consumer Finances adds a less comfortable detail: the median family with debt spent 15.4% of income on payments, up 2.0 points from 2022, and 8.6% of families spent more than 40%. The Census Bureau found 53.5% of households held unsecured debt in 2024, and the median household's wealth was $204,900.

Signs of strain are concentrated rather than widespread. The New York Fed reports 4.7% of household debt in some stage of delinquency, and severe mortgage delinquency at large banks is near a series low at 0.86%, although TransUnion's borrower-level mortgage delinquency rose 29 basis points over the year to 1.56%. The Federal Reserve found 23% of renters fell behind on rent in the past year and 16% of adults used Buy Now, Pay Later in 2025, while Gallup recorded a record 55% of Americans saying their finances are getting worse.

Canada carries a much heavier debt load relative to income. Statistics Canada puts household credit market debt at 176.4% of disposable income, and the Bank of Canada says arrears have stabilized at about 2.5% of borrowers without a mortgage. The Bank of England estimates UK household debt at around 130% of income, below its post-2000 average of 155%, while StepChange's clients owed an average of £19,701 in 2025. EU households owed €10,045 billion in 2025, with liabilities growing 3.3% that year, according to Eurostat.

Total US household debt and its components

The New York Fed figures come from its Consumer Credit Panel, a nationally representative sample of Equifax credit records, and cover debts that appear on credit reports. Mortgages make up about 70% of the total, so housing finance drives the headline number. Experian's separate measure of $18.57 trillion uses its own credit file data and a September reference date, so it is close to but not the same as the New York Fed total. Balances are in current dollars and are not adjusted for inflation.

Debt relative to income and wealth

Ratios matter more than totals for judging how burdensome debt is. The Federal Reserve's Financial Accounts show debt at 0.90 times disposable income, low by the standards of the last 25 years, because incomes and asset values rose faster than borrowing. The 2025 Survey of Consumer Finances, run every three years, shows the debt-to-assets ratio still falling but payment burdens rising since 2022 as borrowers refinanced or took on loans at higher rates. The Census Bureau's 2024 wealth figures come from the Survey of Income and Program Participation and count wealth net of all debts.

Consumer credit, BNPL and borrowing habits

Consumer credit grew at a 1.9% annual rate in August 2026, a slow pace. Federal Reserve and Philadelphia Fed data show more cardholders paying in full, while large banks have increased lending to borrowers with lower credit scores and TransUnion reports record personal loan balances. Buy Now, Pay Later use keeps rising in the Federal Reserve survey, and Gallup finds half of adults have used installment plans online. Different questions explain the gap between the 16% and 51% usage figures: one asks about use in the past year, the other about ever using installment plans for online purchases. Experian's personal loan total includes secured loans, so it is larger than TransUnion's unsecured figure.

Delinquency and financial strain

Delinquency on credit reports is broadly stable, but household surveys show pressure on renters, lower-income families and people without savings. The New York Fed and Philadelphia Fed measure delinquency by balance or account, while TransUnion's mortgage figure counts borrowers, which is why the numbers differ. Gallup's measures capture how people feel about their finances, which is more pessimistic in 2026 than delinquency data alone would suggest. Student loan delinquency figures are distorted by the re-reporting of defaulted loans and are covered on a separate page.

Who holds household debt

Debt is spread unevenly by age and income. Generation X and millennials hold the largest balances because they are in their peak home-buying years, while Generation Z's debt is growing fastest from a small base, according to Experian. Census data show credit card debt is the most common unsecured debt and student loans carry the highest median balances. Experian averages are pulled up by large mortgage balances, so the typical consumer owes less than the $105,444 average.

Household debt in Canada, the UK, the EU and Australia

International comparisons use different measures. Statistics Canada and the Bank of England report debt as a share of disposable income, while Eurostat reports financial liabilities in euros. Canadian households carry about twice the US ratio of debt to income, mainly because of mortgage debt, and the Bank of Canada describes arrears as stable but higher for people without a mortgage. UK figures point to falling indebtedness overall, rising payments as low fixed-rate mortgages expire, and larger debts among people seeking advice from StepChange. The RBA's analysis shows only a small share of Australian borrowers with cash flow shortfalls at the end of 2025.

Methodology

We used central bank data (Federal Reserve Board, New York Fed, Philadelphia Fed, Bank of Canada, Bank of England, Reserve Bank of Australia), official statistics (U.S. Census Bureau, Statistics Canada, Eurostat), credit bureau data from TransUnion and Experian, Gallup surveys and client data from StepChange Debt Charity. Each figure links to the page we quoted, checked on 2026-11-04. Totals differ by source because of coverage: credit report data include only reported debts, the Financial Accounts include nonprofit organizations with households, and surveys depend on what respondents report. StepChange figures describe people seeking debt advice, not all UK households. Survey of Consumer Finances data are from the 2025 wave, published in October 2026. Currency figures are nominal and in each country's own currency.
