Student Loan Debt Statistics 2026

Americans held $1.65 trillion in student loans in Q2 2026, and 10.6% of those balances were 90 or more days past due, according to the Federal Reserve Bank of New York. Analysis

This page collects current figures on student loan balances, who borrows, what college costs families, repayment, default and the new federal repayment plans. Most figures describe the United States in 2025 and 2026, drawn from credit bureau panels, the federal loan portfolio and national surveys. A final section covers England, where loans are repaid through the tax system and the government publishes repayment forecasts.

The total stock of US student debt has stopped growing. The New York Fed put balances at $1.65 trillion in Q2 2026, down $7 billion from the prior quarter, against $18.8 trillion of total household debt. Federal Student Aid reports a federal portfolio of more than $1.7 trillion held by 42.3 million recipients; the two totals differ because the credit panel measures balances reported to Equifax while FSA counts every federal loan, including those in school or grace.

Repayment has become the main story since the pandemic pause ended. The New York Fed found 10.6% of balances 90 or more days past due in Q2 2026, and FSA reported that nearly 20 percent of ED-serviced recipients in active repayment, about 3.5 million people, were more than 30 days behind. TransUnion had already found 20.5% of federal borrowers with a payment due seriously delinquent in February 2025. The Federal Reserve Board's household survey shows how closely payment tracks income: 42% of borrowers with family income under $25,000 paid in full in the prior month, against 92% of those earning $100,000 or more.

Defaults returned at scale in late 2025. New York Fed economists estimate about 1 million borrowers defaulted in Q4 2025 and another 2.6 million in Q1 2026, and FSA counted more than 9.3 million recipients in default by June 2026. Newly defaulted borrowers lost 91 credit score points on average and were often behind on other debts, with 56% of those holding a credit card past due on it. The economists judge the spillover to wider credit markets as limited because these borrowers hold small shares of other debt.

Policy is shifting repayment toward income-based plans and a single new option. FSA reports that 62% of ED-serviced balances in repayment plans sit in income-driven plans, and the Department of Education launched the Repayment Assistance Plan in July 2026 with payments of 1 to 10 percent of income. England offers a contrast: its income-contingent balance reached £294.6 billion, and the Department for Education expects 55% of new full-time undergraduates to repay in full.

How much student debt Americans owe

Two official sources measure the US total. The New York Fed counts balances on Equifax credit reports, while Federal Student Aid counts every federal loan, including loans still in school or grace; that is why FSA's figure is higher even though it excludes private loans. Both show a total that has leveled off near $1.65 to $1.7 trillion. The distribution is wide: College Board finds about a third of federal borrowers owe less than $10,000.

Who holds student loans

Student debt is concentrated among younger adults and among people who attended college, but it is not limited to them: some older adults carry loans taken out for children or grandchildren. The Federal Reserve Board's 2025 survey finds 16 percent of all adults and 21% of those who attended some college held student loans, and Black adults were about twice as likely as White adults to hold them. The age pattern is shown in the chart below.

Borrowing and the cost of college

Annual borrowing has fallen sharply in real terms over the past decade, according to College Board. Families now cover most college costs from income, savings, scholarships and grants, with student and parent borrowing together funding about a fifth of spending in Sallie Mae's survey. The latest federal longitudinal data, from 2020, show the average total borrowed by bachelor's graduates with federal loans, including later graduate study.

Repayment and delinquency

Missed payments began appearing on credit reports again in 2025, after a pause of more than four years. TransUnion found a record share of borrowers with a payment due seriously delinquent in early 2025, concentrated among subprime borrowers, and the share of balances seriously delinquent has climbed back above 10% in the New York Fed data. FSA's own portfolio data show a higher 31-day delinquency rate than in 2019. Survey data tie the problem to income: borrowers under $50,000 a year are far less likely to make full payments.

Default and its effects

Because default requires about nine months of missed payments, the first post-pause defaults appeared in late 2025. Both FSA portfolio data and the New York Fed credit panel show millions of new defaults within two quarters. Defaulted borrowers are older on average than before the pandemic, lose large amounts of credit score, and are often behind on cards, car loans and mortgages too. New York Fed researchers note that these borrowers hold small shares of other debt, which limits wider market effects.

Repayment plans and borrower sentiment

Income-driven plans now hold most federal balances in repayment, and the 2025 budget law replaced several of them with the Repayment Assistance Plan from July 2026. The Department of Education argues the old system was confusing and left many borrowers owing more than they borrowed. Survey data from Gallup and the Lumina Foundation show that debt still shapes major life decisions, including for borrowers with small balances.

Student loans in England

England runs an income-contingent system: graduates repay a share of earnings above a threshold through the tax system, and remaining balances are written off after a set term. Balances therefore grow faster than in the US and are not directly comparable. The government's own forecasts expect only part of the money lent to be repaid, although the newer Plan 5 terms raise the expected repayment share for recent starters.

Frequently asked questions

How much student loan debt is there in the US?

The Federal Reserve Bank of New York put US student loan balances at $1.65 trillion in Q2 2026. Federal Student Aid reports more than $1.7 trillion in federal loans held by 42.3 million recipients as of June 2026; the figures differ because they measure different things.

What share of student loans is delinquent?

In Q2 2026, 10.6% of US student loan balances were 90 or more days past due, according to the New York Fed. Federal Student Aid reported that 15.7% of balances in active repayment were at least 31 days delinquent in June 2026, and TransUnion found 20.5% of federal borrowers with a payment due were 90 or more days past due in February 2025.

How many people are in default on federal student loans?

Federal Student Aid counted more than 9.3 million recipients in default as of June 2026, holding $234 billion. New York Fed economists estimate about 3.6 million borrowers newly defaulted across Q4 2025 and Q1 2026.

How much do college graduates borrow?

College Board reports that 2023-24 bachelor's degree recipients who borrowed took out $29,560 on average. Among all federal borrowers, College Board found that 32% owed less than $10,000 and 21% owed $10,000 to $20,000 as of June 2025.

What is the Repayment Assistance Plan?

It is a federal income-based repayment plan available from July 1, 2026. The Department of Education says monthly payments range from 1% to 10% of income, with an interest waiver and a matching principal payment of up to $50 for qualifying on-time payments.

How does UK student debt compare?

England's higher education student loan balance reached £294.6 billion in financial year 2025-26, according to the Student Loans Company. The Department for Education expects 55% of full-time undergraduates starting in 2025/26 to repay in full, because repayments depend on earnings.

Methodology

Figures come from official statistics, central bank research, credit bureau data and named surveys, each copied from the publisher's own page. US totals differ by source: the New York Fed measures balances on Equifax credit reports, while Federal Student Aid counts every federal loan, including loans in school, grace or default, and excludes private loans. TransUnion delinquency rates are shares of borrowers with a payment due, not shares of balances. Survey figures (Federal Reserve Board, Sallie Mae, Lumina Foundation and Gallup) reflect respondents' answers and have sampling error. The NCES cumulative borrowing figure uses 2020 data because no newer release of that survey exists. College Board, Sallie Mae, NCES and House of Commons Library pages are updated in place, so we cite archived copies of the versions we checked. English figures are in pounds and describe an income-contingent system that is not directly comparable with US loans.
