Analysis
This page collects current figures on credit cards: outstanding balances and the number of accounts, delinquency and charge-off rates, interest rates and fees, repayment behavior, who holds cards, rewards, how often people pay by card, network volumes at Visa, Mastercard and American Express, and card fraud. Most figures describe the United States in 2025 and 2026, drawn from Federal Reserve data, credit bureau panels, regulator reports and company filings. A final section compares the United Kingdom, the euro area and Canada.
Card debt is still rising, but more slowly than in 2022 and 2023. The New York Fed measured $1.26 trillion in card balances in Q2 2026, and the Federal Reserve Board's G.19 release put revolving consumer credit at $1,352.4 billion in August 2026. TransUnion counted 590.5 million bankcards in Q2 2026, up from 530.6 million three years earlier. The Philadelphia Fed reports that total balances at large banks grew 3.4% in the year to Q2 2026, while revolving balances grew only 1.5%, which suggests that more of the new spending is paid off each month.
Credit quality depends on which measure is used. The Federal Reserve Board puts the bank card charge-off rate at 3.82% and the delinquency rate at 2.85% in Q2 2026. On credit reports, the New York Fed found 12.8% of card balances 90 or more days past due in Q1 2026, but its own economists show that much of this reflects charged-off debt that lenders keep reporting for longer. New flows into serious delinquency, 6.97% of balances in Q2 2026, have been flat for about two years.
Borrowing on a card remains expensive. The Fed's average rate on accounts assessed interest was 22.36% in August 2026, and the Philadelphia Fed found an average purchase APR of 24.1% on general purpose cards and 31.3% on store cards at large banks. The CFPB estimates that consumers were assessed $160 billion in interest and $31.3 billion in fees in 2024, including $17.0 billion in late fees, and that 15% of general purpose cardholders made only the minimum payment, the highest share since at least 2015.
Cards are also the most common way Americans pay. Consumers in the Federal Reserve's payment diary made 16 of their 47 monthly payments by credit card, and 38% named credit cards as their preferred in-person method. Visa reported $3,673 billion in US credit card payments volume in the 12 months to September 2026. Outside the US, card payments make up 57% of non-cash transactions in the euro area, and the UK effective rate on interest-charging card balances was 21.71% in September 2026.
How much Americans owe on credit cards
Three sources measure US card debt in different ways. The New York Fed uses Equifax credit reports, the Federal Reserve Board's G.19 release counts revolving credit held by lenders, and TransUnion reports bankcard balances from its own credit file. Totals differ because of coverage (store cards, small business cards, charged-off debt) and timing, but all three show balances at record highs with slower growth than in 2022 and 2023. Account counts keep rising as lenders open more cards.

Delinquency and charge-off rates
Bank-reported rates and credit bureau rates tell different stories. Federal Reserve Board figures from bank regulatory filings show card delinquency and charge-offs easing in 2026, and large issuers report charge-off rates between 1.8% and 2.9%. The New York Fed's share of balances 90 or more days late on credit reports kept rising to 12.8%, but its economists attribute much of that to charged-off debt that stays on reports longer. Flows into new delinquency, the better guide to current stress, have been stable for about two years. Lenders are again lending more to lower-score borrowers, which could raise loss rates later.

Interest rates, interest paid and fees
Card rates rose sharply with the federal funds rate in 2022 and 2023 and have barely fallen since. The Federal Reserve Board reports two averages: the stated APR across all accounts, and the effective rate on accounts that actually paid interest, which is the better guide to what borrowers pay. The Philadelphia Fed and CFPB show that store cards and newly opened accounts carry even higher rates. CFPB figures on interest and fees describe 2024 and come from large issuers' regulatory data, so they may not cover the whole market.

Revolving balances and minimum payments
Cardholders split into two groups: those who pay in full each month and pay no interest, and those who carry balances. Survey and account data agree that roughly half revolve. Large-bank data for 2026 show a record share of accounts paying in full, while CFPB data for 2024 show a record share paying only the minimum, so payment behavior is diverging between stronger and weaker borrowers. The 2025 Survey of Consumer Finances adds a family view: the median balance among families with card debt rose to $3,100.

Who has a credit card, and rewards
Card ownership in the US is high overall but closely tied to income. Almost every adult with family income of $100,000 or more has a card, against fewer than half of those under $25,000. Access to new credit also differs by race: in the Federal Reserve's 2025 household survey, Black applicants were denied or approved for less than they asked at more than twice the rate of White applicants. Rewards are concentrated among higher-score borrowers who tend to pay in full, which is why cash back and points cards dominate new general purpose accounts.

How often people pay by card, and network volumes
Credit cards are now the most used payment instrument in the US by number of payments, ahead of debit cards and well ahead of cash, and the Federal Reserve Payments Study shows card payments growing faster than debit between 2021 and 2024. Network figures from Visa, Mastercard and American Express are reported in different ways: Visa and Mastercard report payments or gross dollar volume on cards carrying their brands, issued by banks, while American Express reports billed business on its own cards. Fiscal periods also differ (Visa's year ends in September), so the totals should not be added together.

Card disputes, fraud and comparisons with the UK, euro area and Canada
Card fraud and disputes are measured differently in each country, so the figures below are not directly comparable. UK Finance reports fraud on UK-issued debit and credit cards, where case numbers keep rising while losses per case fall, while the CFPB counts disputed charges, which include billing errors and cancelled subscriptions as well as fraud. UK card rates are similar to US levels, and UK card borrowing has grown faster than in the US in 2026. In the euro area cards dominate non-cash payments but cash is still used for about half of in-store purchases, and Canadian card balances are growing more slowly than other consumer loans.

It depends on the measure. Bank-reported card delinquency was 2.85% and the charge-off rate 3.82% in Q2 2026, both easing according to the Federal Reserve Board. The New York Fed's flow of balances into serious delinquency was 6.97%, almost unchanged from a year earlier, although the stock of 90-day-late balances on credit reports reached 12.8% in Q1 2026.
How many credit cards are there in the US?

Methodology
Figures come from central banks, regulators, a national credit bureau and card networks' own filings, each copied from the publisher's page; G.19 figures link to the dated August 2026 release rather than the page that is replaced each month. US balance totals differ by source: the New York Fed uses Equifax credit reports, the Federal Reserve Board's G.19 counts revolving credit held by lenders, and TransUnion counts bankcards in its own file. Delinquency rates also differ by definition (share of balances or of borrowers, 30 or 90 days, bank books or credit reports), so compare rates only within one source. CFPB figures describe 2024 and come mainly from large issuers' regulatory data. Survey figures from the Federal Reserve's household survey and payment diary reflect respondents' answers and carry sampling error. The Survey of Consumer Finances figures come from its 2025 survey, published in October 2026. Network volumes are not additive: Visa reports a fiscal year ending in September, and Mastercard and Visa include debit cards in their totals. UK, euro area and Canadian figures use local definitions and currencies.
