Analysis
This page collects figures on shopping and paying with a phone: the mobile share of US online sales and the size of US e-commerce, the use of mobile wallets in stores and online in Europe and the UK, payment apps and buy now pay later providers, mobile money in developing economies, and app-based ordering and AI shopping assistants. It draws on official statistics, central bank surveys, industry reports and company results. Most figures describe 2025 and 2026; euro area payment behavior comes from the ECB's 2024 study, its latest edition.
In the United States the phone is now the main shopping screen. Adobe's transaction data show that 56.4% of online holiday transactions in 2025 went through smartphones, and mobile drove 66.5% of online sales on Christmas Day and 57.5% on Cyber Monday. Adobe expects mobile to account for 57.4% of 2026 holiday spend. The Census Bureau puts e-commerce at 17.1% of all US retail sales in Q2 2026, growing 12.2% a year against 6.7% for retail overall.
Paying in a physical store with a phone has gone mainstream in the UK but not yet in the euro area. UK Finance counts 37.6 million UK consumers registered for a mobile wallet and 58% of adults paying by phone at least monthly in 2025. The ECB's study of euro area consumers found mobile devices used for 6% of point-of-sale payments in 2024, almost double the 2022 level but far behind cash (52%). Online, wallets and apps made up 29% of euro area online payments, and 76% in the Netherlands.
Payment apps operate at very large scale. PayPal reported 440 million active accounts and $487.1 billion of payment volume in Q3 2026, Block said Cash App reached 60 million monthly transacting actives in September 2026, and Klarna processed $36.6 billion of volume in Q2 2026 for 120 million active consumers. In developing economies the phone often is the bank: the GSMA counts 2.3 billion registered mobile money accounts and more than $2 trillion of transactions in 2025, with merchant payments growing by almost half.
The next shift is software that shops for the user. Visa's 2026 holiday survey found that 54% of US adults had used AI for at least one shopping task, up from 47% a year earlier, and Shopify reports that 65% of shoppers plan to use AI for at least one shopping task this season. App-based local commerce is also growing quickly: DoorDash handled 993 million orders in Q3 2026, up 28%.
Mobile share of US online shopping
Adobe measures transactions on US retail sites that use its analytics, so these shares describe online spending by device rather than all retail. Phones dominate on holidays when people are away from their desks, such as Thanksgiving and Christmas Day, while the gap is smaller on Cyber Monday, a working day. Mobile is also the main channel for buy now pay later purchases, while most returns are still started on a desktop. The Census Bureau figures put online sales in context: e-commerce is about a sixth of US retail and is growing faster than retail as a whole.

Phones as the gateway to online services
These figures show how far phone access and online shopping reach before any specific purchase. In the EU almost every internet user goes online with a mobile device, and more than three quarters of internet users buy online; in the UK the share of adults shopping online is similar. In lower and middle income countries, phone ownership is close to universal and smartphones number in the billions, which is the base on which mobile money and app commerce grow. The Federal Reserve diary shows that a little over a third of US consumer payments are made remotely, a category that includes online, app and phone payments.

Mobile payments in stores and online in Europe and the UK
The ECB's SPACE study is the most detailed public measure of how euro area consumers pay, and it shows mobile payment at the till growing from a low base, with use concentrated among younger consumers. Online, wallets and apps are a large minority of payments, though the ECB category also includes PayPal and the Dutch iDEAL scheme. UK Finance data show the UK much further along, with most adults paying by phone every month. The ECB figures describe 2024 and the UK figures 2025, and the two use different survey methods, so the gap is indicative.

Company figures show the scale of the largest payment apps, but each company defines an active user differently: PayPal counts accounts with a transaction in the past 12 months, Block counts Cash App accounts with a transaction in a given month, and Klarna counts consumers who used its network in the past 12 months. PayPal and Klarna figures are global. Block's data also show that fewer than half of Cash App's monthly actives used the Cash App Card in September 2026.

Mobile money in developing economies
Mobile money accounts run on basic phones as well as smartphones and are held with mobile network operators rather than banks. The GSMA collects its figures directly from providers, so they count accounts, not people, and one person may hold several. Fewer than a third of registered accounts are active in a given month, so the active count is a better guide to real use. Merchant payments are the fastest growing use, a sign that mobile money is moving from transfers between people toward everyday commerce.

App ordering and AI shopping assistants
Delivery apps are one of the clearest forms of mobile commerce, and DoorDash's results show order volume still growing by more than a quarter a year, helped by acquisitions. Surveys by Visa and Shopify point to the next interface: AI assistants that compare prices, find deals and, increasingly, complete purchases. Survey answers about AI describe use for at least one task, which can be as light as asking for gift ideas, and trust in letting AI pay is lower than willingness to let it search.

Frequently asked questions
What share of online shopping happens on phones?
Adobe's data show that smartphones handled 56.4% of US online holiday transactions in 2025, up from 54.5% in 2024, and Adobe forecasts that mobile will take 57.4% of 2026 holiday spend. On Christmas Day 2025 the mobile share of online sales reached 66.5%.
How common are mobile payments in stores?
It depends on the country. UK Finance reports that 58% of UK adults used mobile payments at least once a month in 2025. In the euro area, the ECB found that mobile devices were used for 6% of point-of-sale payments in 2024, almost double the 2022 share but far behind cash (52%) and cards (39%).
How many people use payment apps like PayPal, Cash App and Klarna?
PayPal reported 440 million active accounts in Q3 2026, Block said Cash App had 60 million monthly transacting actives in September 2026, and Klarna reported 120 million active consumers in Q2 2026. Each company defines an active user differently, so the counts are not comparable.
How big is US e-commerce?
The Census Bureau estimated US retail e-commerce sales at $340.2 billion in Q2 2026, seasonally adjusted, or 17.1% of total retail sales. E-commerce grew 12.2% from a year earlier, against 6.7% for all retail.
How big is mobile money?
The GSMA reports more than $2 trillion of mobile money transactions in 2025 across 2.3 billion registered accounts, of which 593 million were active in a 30-day period. Merchant payments grew by almost half to $155 billion.
Do people use AI to shop?
Visa's 2026 survey found that 54% of US adults had used AI for at least one shopping task, up from 47% a year earlier, most often to compare prices. Shopify reports that 65% of shoppers plan to use AI for a shopping task in the 2026 holiday season.
Methodology
Figures come from the organizations that produced them: transaction data from Adobe Analytics; official statistics from the U.S. Census Bureau and Eurostat; central bank and official surveys from the European Central Bank, the World Bank and Federal Reserve Financial Services; industry data from UK Finance and the GSMA; company results from PayPal, Block, Klarna, DoorDash and Shopify; and consumer surveys by Visa and Shopify. Adobe's shares cover US retail sites that use its analytics, while Census figures cover all US retailers with paid employees, so the two are not directly comparable. The ECB study describes 2024, its latest edition, and counts the number of payments unless value is stated. GSMA figures count accounts, not people. Company user counts follow each company's own definition and are global unless stated. Every quote was checked against its source page on the update date.
