Data Breach Statistics 2026
The global average cost of a data breach was $4.99 million in IBM's 2026 Cost of a Data Breach Report, which covers breaches from March 2025 to February 2026, and one in four malicious breaches in that study were AI-enabled. Verizon's 2026 Data Breach Investigations Report analyzed more than 22,000 confirmed breaches and found that vulnerability exploitation was the top way in, at 31%, with third parties involved in 48% of breaches. European regulators received an average of 443 breach notifications a day in the year to January 2026, according to DLA Piper.

Analysis
This page brings together statistics on data breaches at organizations: what they cost, how often they occur, how attackers get in, how long detection and containment take, the role of AI, and the regulatory and personal consequences. Figures cover 2024 to 2026 and come from global vendor studies (IBM and the Ponemon Institute, Verizon, Mandiant, Thales, Microsoft, Coveware), regulators and governments in the UK, EU, Canada and Australia, and US public surveys and complaint data. Broader online crime and malware have their own pages.
Breach costs are high and concentrated. IBM and the Ponemon Institute put the global average at $4.99 million in their 2026 report, against $4.44 million in the 2025 edition, while US organizations averaged $10.22 million and healthcare $7.42 million in the 2025 edition. In the 2026 study, financial services breaches averaged $6.3 million. Insurance claims analyzed by Verizon show much smaller typical losses, around $100,000 by 2024, which is a reminder that averages are driven by a minority of very expensive incidents.
The way attackers get in has shifted toward software flaws. Verizon's 2026 report found vulnerability exploitation in 31% of breaches as the initial access vector, ahead of credential abuse at 13%, and Mandiant's 2025 investigations put exploits first for the sixth year in a row at 32%. Third parties were involved in 48% of breaches and ransomware in 48%. People still matter: a human element appeared in 62% of breaches, and voice phishing grew to 11% of Mandiant intrusions while email phishing fell to 6%.
Detection is improving but patching is not. Organizations found 52% of intrusions themselves in Mandiant's 2025 caseload, and IBM's breach lifecycle shortened to 241 days in its 2025 edition. Yet only 26% of actively exploited critical vulnerabilities were fully remediated in Verizon's data, and the median time to fix rose to 43 days. In the UK, 43% of businesses identified a breach or attack in the 2025/2026 survey, rising to 69% of large firms, but only 40% reported their most disruptive incident outside the business.
Regulatory exposure keeps growing. DLA Piper counted an average of 443 personal data breach notifications a day across Europe in the year to January 2026, up 22%, and GDPR fines totaled about EUR 1.2 billion in 2025 and EUR 7.1 billion since 2018. Australia's privacy regulator received 667 notifications in the first half of 2026. In Canada, 43% of people say a privacy breach has affected them, and the FTC received more than 1.1 million US identity theft reports in 2024.
The cost of a data breach
IBM and the Ponemon Institute publish the most cited estimate of breach cost, based on interviews at breached organizations. The 2026 edition puts the global average at $4.99 million, against $4.44 million in the 2025 edition, and the United States remained the most expensive country in the 2025 edition at $10.22 million. Verizon's insurance claim data give a different view, with much lower typical losses, because most claims come from smaller firms. Average costs are pulled up by large incidents, so the median organization pays far less.

How often breaches happen
Counts of breaches depend on who is required to report and to whom. European regulators received 22% more breach notifications per day in the year to January 2026 than a year earlier, while Australian and Canadian regulators report steady volumes. Survey data from the UK show that about four in ten businesses identify some breach or attack each year, with larger firms far more likely to detect one. Lower rates among small firms partly reflect weaker monitoring.

How breaches start
Exploitation of software vulnerabilities has overtaken stolen credentials as the most common way into an organization in both Verizon's and Mandiant's data. People are still involved in most breaches, through phishing, errors or misuse, and Mandiant saw attackers shift from email toward voice phishing. Third parties such as suppliers and cloud providers now appear in nearly half of breaches, and Thales finds that many organizations cannot say where all their data sits. Vendor datasets differ in scope, so percentages are not directly comparable between them.

Detection, containment and patching
More organizations now detect intrusions themselves rather than learning of them from attackers or outside parties, although Mandiant's median dwell time rose in 2025. IBM measures the full lifecycle from breach to containment, which runs to months, while Mandiant measures dwell time before detection, which is counted in days. Patching remains slow: only about a quarter of actively exploited critical vulnerabilities were fully fixed in Verizon's data.

AI and data breaches
AI now shows up on both sides of breach statistics. In IBM's 2026 study more than a fifth of organizations reported a breach targeting AI models or applications, and AI-enabled breaches cost more than the average. Employee use of AI tools, sanctioned or not, adds to exposure in Verizon's data. These are early measurements from surveys of breached organizations and should be read as directional.

Ransom, fines and impact on people
Fewer ransomware victims are paying, and the median payment is falling in Verizon's data, while IBM and Coveware show attackers leaning on stolen data and reputational pressure. Regulatory penalties in Europe held steady at about EUR 1.2 billion in 2025. For individuals, the effects show up as hacked accounts and identity theft reports, which run into the millions each year.

Methodology
Cost figures come from IBM and the Ponemon Institute's annual study of breached organizations (the 2026 edition covers breaches from March 2025 to February 2026, the 2025 edition March 2024 to February 2025, and each figure carries the data year it describes) and from Verizon's analysis of cyber insurance claims; both are vendor research with their own samples. Breach cause and detection figures come from Verizon's Data Breach Investigations Report, Mandiant's incident response caseload and Coveware's extortion cases, which reflect the incidents those firms saw rather than all breaches. Prevalence and reporting figures come from the UK Cyber security breaches survey (fieldwork August to December 2025), regulators in Australia and Canada, European data via DLA Piper's survey of supervisory authorities, ENISA, Thales's survey of IT leaders and US public surveys. Definitions of a breach differ: some sources count any breach or attack, others only confirmed data disclosure. Figures should not be combined across sources. Each figure was checked against the source text on the check date shown.
