Malware Statistics 2026

Kaspersky detected an average of 500,000 new malicious files a day in 2025, and Google Play Protect found more than 27 million new malicious apps outside Google Play that year. Ransomware was present in 48% of breaches in Verizon's 2026 report, yet Chainalysis found that on-chain ransom payments fell 8% to $820 million in 2025 as the share of victims paying dropped to an estimated 28%. Password stealer detections rose 59% in Kaspersky's 2025 data.

Analysis

This page covers malware and ransomware: how much new malware appears, how many users and organizations encounter it, ransomware activity and payments, the main infection routes, recovery costs, mobile threats, infostealers and the use of AI. It draws on 2025 and 2026 data from security vendors' telemetry and surveys, blockchain analysis, incident response firms, Google's Android security reports, and government agencies in the US, UK, EU and Australia. Wider cybercrime and data breaches have separate pages.

The flow of new malware is enormous and steady. Kaspersky detected an average of 500,000 malicious files a day in 2025, Microsoft blocks about 4.5 million new malware attempts daily, and Google Play Protect identified more than 27 million new malicious apps from outside Google Play in 2025. Exposure is common: 48% of Windows users protected by Kaspersky encountered a threat over the year to October 2025. CrowdStrike reports that operations by AI-enabled adversaries rose 89% in 2025.

Ransomware is more frequent but less profitable per attack. Verizon found ransomware in 48% of breaches in its 2026 report, claimed leak site victims rose 50% in 2025, and nationally significant incidents handled by the UK NCSC more than doubled to 204. Yet Chainalysis estimates that on-chain ransom payments fell 8% to $820 million, and Coveware reports payment rates near 20%, a record low, falling to 15% when attackers only steal data.

The routes in are familiar. Sophos survey respondents named exploited vulnerabilities as the top root cause at 32%, followed by compromised credentials at 23% and malicious emails at 19%, and Mandiant found that access from an earlier compromise was the leading vector in ransomware operations at 30%. Recovery has improved: Sophos measured an average recovery cost of $1.53 million excluding ransom, down 44%, with 53% of victims back within a week.

Growth is concentrated in credential theft and mobile banking malware. Kaspersky recorded a 59% rise in password stealer detections and found 255,090 new mobile banking trojan packages in 2025, while ESET saw NFC-based Android threats grow 87%. AI is beginning to appear in malware, but Verizon reports that fewer than 2.5% of AI-assisted malware observations used uncommon techniques.

How much new malware appears

Security vendors count new malicious files in the hundreds of thousands per day, but each counts differently: a single malware family can produce thousands of slightly altered files. The more useful signal is the share of users who actually encounter a threat, which Kaspersky puts at close to half of Windows users over a year and about one in ten computers in a single quarter. CrowdStrike's finding that AI-enabled adversaries increased operations by 89% shows how quickly tooling is changing, while UK survey data suggest only a small share of businesses notice a malware infection in a year.

Ransomware activity

Ransomware indicators point in different directions depending on the source. Leak site counts and breach datasets show more victims than ever, with ransomware present in nearly half of the breaches Verizon analyzed and a projected 40% rise in victims in ESET's data. Complaint and survey data show lower rates, partly because only a fraction of victims report to authorities, and the UK business survey recorded a fall to 1% of businesses. The UK saw a sharp rise in nationally significant incidents handled by the NCSC.

Ransom payments

Fewer victims are paying, and total payments have stopped growing even as attack counts rise. Chainalysis tracks on-chain payments and estimates that only about 28% of attacks ended in payment in 2025. Coveware, which negotiates on behalf of victims, reports record low payment rates, especially when attackers only steal data without encrypting it. Average payment figures swing widely from quarter to quarter because a few very large payments distort them; medians are more representative.

How attacks get in and what they cost

Unpatched vulnerabilities are the most common way ransomware gets in, according to victims surveyed by Sophos, with stolen credentials and email close behind. Mandiant finds that access left over from an earlier compromise is now the top vector in ransomware operations. Once inside, attackers move quickly: CrowdStrike measured an average breakout time of 29 minutes in 2025. Recovery costs excluding ransom have fallen, and more victims are back in operation within a week.

Mobile malware

Mobile threats are dominated by adware by volume, but banking trojans are the fastest growing category in Kaspersky's data. Google reports that most new malicious Android apps are found outside the official Play store, which is why sideloaded apps carry much higher risk. Telemetry from security vendors covers only their own customers, so these counts describe trends rather than total infections.

Password stealers and spyware grew faster than other malware types in 2025, feeding the credential theft that drives many later intrusions. Law enforcement action can make a visible dent, as the drop in Lumma Stealer detections after its disruption shows. AI is starting to appear inside malware and in the tools around it: IBM found a 56% rise in AI-enabled breaches, but Verizon finds that most AI-assisted malware reuses well-known techniques rather than inventing new ones.

Chainalysis estimates ransomware actors received more than $820 million in on-chain payments in 2025, down 8% from $892 million in 2024, while the median payment rose to $59,556.

What is the most common way malware gets into an organization?

Exploited vulnerabilities were the leading root cause of ransomware attacks in Sophos's 2025 survey at 32%, followed by compromised credentials at 23%. Mandiant found that access from a prior compromise was the top vector in ransomware operations at 30%.

Methodology

Malware volume and exposure figures come from the telemetry of security vendors (Kaspersky, Microsoft, ESET, CrowdStrike, Google); each counts only what its own sensors and customers see, and vendors define new malware differently. Ransomware figures combine breach investigations (Verizon, Mandiant, IBM), victim surveys (Sophos, the UK Cyber security breaches survey with fieldwork from August to December 2025), case data from a ransomware negotiator (Coveware), blockchain analysis (Chainalysis), and government reports (FBI IC3, UK NCSC, ENISA, Australian Signals Directorate). Payment statistics vary widely by source because averages are skewed by a few large payments and because on-chain estimates are revised upward as more wallets are identified. Periods range from quarters to fiscal years. Each figure was checked against the source text on the check date shown.
