Email Marketing Statistics 2026
The average marketing email is opened by roughly 31% to 44% of recipients and clicked by about 2%: Mailchimp reports a 35.63% open rate and 2.62% click rate, MailerLite a 43.46% median open rate and Klaviyo a 31% campaign open rate in 2026. Validity found 87.2% of marketing email reached the inbox worldwide in 2025, but only 77.4% at Microsoft. Since 2024, Gmail, Yahoo and Outlook require senders of more than 5,000 messages a day to authenticate with SPF, DKIM and DMARC and keep spam complaints below 0.3%, and Kaspersky estimates 44.99% of all email traffic is still spam.

Analysis
This page collects statistics on email marketing performance and the rules that govern it: where email is opened, average open, click and unsubscribe rates, inbox placement by mailbox provider, the revenue share of automated email, the bulk sender requirements set by Google and Microsoft, DMARC adoption, and the scale of spam, phishing and email fraud. Most figures describe 2025 and 2026 and come from email platforms reporting on their own customers (Mailchimp, Klaviyo, MailerLite, Omnisend, GetResponse), deliverability and analytics firms (Validity, Litmus, EasyDMARC, Red Sift), mailbox providers (Google, Microsoft), security firms (Kaspersky, Cloudflare) and US authorities (the FBI and the FTC). Coverage is global unless a figure says otherwise.
Benchmarks for email engagement depend on who is measured. Mailchimp's customers average a 35.63% open rate and 2.62% click rate, MailerLite's 3.6 million campaigns from December 2024 to November 2025 had a 43.46% median open rate and 2.09% click rate, and Klaviyo's 2026 data from more than 200,000 mostly ecommerce brands put campaigns at 31% opens and 1.69% clicks. Omnisend's ecommerce customers saw 30.7%. Unsubscribe rates agree closely at about 0.22% per send at both Mailchimp and MailerLite.
Open rates have become a weaker signal. Litmus attributed 76.56% of tracked opens in September 2026 to Apple, whose Mail Privacy Protection registers opens automatically, and Apple plus Gmail together account for nearly 90% of opens. That is why the stronger benchmarks to track are clicks and orders: Klaviyo's average campaign converted 0.16% of recipients into buyers, while automated flows converted 2.11% and produced nearly 41% of email revenue from 5.3% of sends.
Deliverability improved in 2025. Validity measured a global inbox placement rate of 87.2%, up 3.7 points, with Gmail at 89.8%, Yahoo at 87.3%, Apple at 82% and Microsoft trailing at 77.4%. Validity credits the bulk sender rules: Google has required authentication and a reported spam rate under 0.3% from senders of more than 5,000 daily messages since February 2024, and Microsoft began sending noncompliant high-volume mail to junk from May 5, 2025. Google says unauthenticated mail reaching Gmail users fell 75%.
Authentication is spreading but enforcement lags. EasyDMARC found valid DMARC records on 52.1% of the top 1.8 million domains in early 2026, up from 29.1% in 2023, but only 22.9% enforced a quarantine or reject policy. Meanwhile spam still makes up 44.99% of email traffic by Kaspersky's count, 5.6% of mail scanned by Cloudflare was malicious, and US victims reported $3,046,598,558 in business email compromise losses to the FBI in 2025.
Where email gets opened and how much is sent
Most marketing email is now opened in just two environments. Litmus tracked over 1.5 billion opens in September 2026 and attributed about three in four to Apple and about one in six to Gmail, with desktop Outlook a distant third. Apple's share is inflated by Mail Privacy Protection, which preloads images and registers opens that a person may never have made, so open counts on Apple devices overstate real reading. Volume figures here come from single platforms and mailbox providers, not a global census: Omnisend counts what its own customers sent and Google counts what Gmail blocks.

Open, click and unsubscribe benchmarks
Average open rates for marketing email sit between about 30% and 45% depending on whose customers are measured: 30.7% at Omnisend, 31% for Klaviyo campaigns, 35.63% at Mailchimp and a 43.46% median at MailerLite. Click rates are far lower and closer together, at roughly 1.7% to 2.6%. The spread in open rates reflects platform mix (ecommerce stores versus newsletters and small businesses), the use of medians versus averages, and how each platform treats machine opens from Apple Mail Privacy Protection. Unsubscribe rates are consistently near 0.2% per send. Compare your own numbers with the platform that hosts them, and lean on clicks rather than opens.

Deliverability and inbox placement
Getting accepted by a mail server is not the same as reaching the inbox. Validity's panel data show that 87.2% of tracked marketing email reached the inbox worldwide in 2025, up 3.7 percentage points, which still leaves about one message in eight in spam or blocked. Placement depends heavily on the mailbox provider: Gmail and Yahoo inboxed close to nine in ten messages, while Microsoft's Outlook and Hotmail sent 15.1% to junk and inboxed 77.4%. Validity links the gains to the bulk sender rules from Google, Yahoo and Microsoft, which pushed senders to authenticate and clean their lists. These are averages across Validity's monitored senders, who tend to be larger and more deliverability-aware than the typical sender.

Automation, conversions and revenue
A small share of email drives a large share of sales. Klaviyo found that automated flows such as welcome, abandoned cart and post-purchase messages were 5.3% of sends but produced nearly 41% of email revenue in 2026, and Validity found that 2% of email volume accounted for 37% of email-driven sales in 2025. Conversion rates per message are small in absolute terms: an average Klaviyo campaign turned 0.16% of recipients into buyers, against 2.11% for flows. These figures come from ecommerce-heavy customer bases and measure attributed revenue, which depends on each platform's attribution window.

Sender authentication rules and DMARC adoption
Since February 2024, anyone sending more than 5,000 messages a day to Gmail must authenticate with SPF, DKIM and DMARC, offer one-click unsubscribe and keep reported spam below 0.3%; Yahoo adopted matching rules and Microsoft followed for Outlook in May 2025. Google says unauthenticated mail reaching Gmail users fell 75% after the change. Adoption data show the rules working but incomplete: EasyDMARC found valid DMARC records on 52.1% of the top 1.8 million domains in early 2026, yet only 22.9% used an enforcing policy. Red Sift counted more than 400,000 new DMARC domains in the month before Microsoft's deadline. The spam rate ceilings are a floor for compliance, and Validity now treats under 0.1% as the practical target.

Spam, phishing and the law
Close to half of all email traffic is still spam, according to Kaspersky, and a smaller slice is outright malicious: Cloudflare classified 5.6% of the email it analyzed in 2025 as malicious, most often because of deceptive links. The financial damage concentrates in business email compromise, which cost US victims just over $3 billion in complaints to the FBI in 2025. For legitimate marketers in the US, the CAN-SPAM Act sets the floor: honest headers and subject lines, a working opt-out honored within 10 business days, and civil penalties of up to $53,088 for each violating email. Security vendors measure their own customers' traffic, so their shares are not directly comparable.

Frequently asked questions
What is a good email open rate in 2026?
Platform averages range from about 31% to 44%: Klaviyo reports a 31% average campaign open rate for 2026, Mailchimp 35.63% across all users and MailerLite a 43.46% median for 2025. Because Apple Mail Privacy Protection inflates opens, compare against your own platform's benchmark and track clicks as well.
What is the average email click rate?
About 2%. Mailchimp's average click rate is 2.62%, MailerLite's was 2.09% in 2025 and Klaviyo's average campaign click rate was 1.69% in 2026. Automated flows at Klaviyo averaged 5.58%.
What spam complaint rate do Gmail and Outlook allow?
Google asks senders to keep the spam rate in Postmaster Tools below 0.10% and never reach 0.30%. Validity says under 0.1% is now the practical expectation across mailbox providers, replacing older guidance of 0.2% to 0.3%.
Who has to follow the Gmail, Yahoo and Outlook bulk sender rules?
Senders of more than 5,000 messages a day. Google has enforced the rules since February 1, 2024, and Microsoft began sending noncompliant high-volume mail to the Outlook Junk folder from May 5, 2025; both require SPF, DKIM and DMARC authentication.
What percentage of marketing email reaches the inbox?
Validity measured an average global inbox placement rate of 87.2% in 2025, so about one marketing email in eight went to spam or was blocked. Placement ranged from 89.8% at Gmail to 77.4% at Microsoft.
How much email is spam?
Kaspersky estimates that 44.99% of global email traffic was spam in 2025. Cloudflare found 5.6% of the email it analyzed was malicious, and Google says Gmail blocks nearly 15 billion unwanted emails every day.
Methodology
We selected figures from primary publishers: email platforms reporting on their own customers' sends (Mailchimp, Klaviyo, MailerLite, Omnisend, GetResponse), deliverability and analytics firms (Validity, Litmus, EasyDMARC, Red Sift), mailbox providers' published rules and announcements (Google, Microsoft), security telemetry (Kaspersky, Cloudflare) and US government sources (FBI, FTC). Every quote was copied from the source page and rechecked with an automated source checker. Platform benchmarks are not comparable to each other: customer mix, averages versus medians, and the handling of machine opens from Apple Mail Privacy Protection all differ, and none covers email sent through other systems. Validity's placement rates come from its monitored panel, Litmus's client shares from opens tracked in its product, and the Litmus page is updated monthly. GetResponse's figure describes 2023 and Google's 99.9% and 15 billion figures date from its 2023 announcement; they are the latest editions available. Yahoo's sender requirements match Google's but its pages could not be fetched for verification from our location, and the Radicati Group's email user counts were unreachable, so neither is cited.
