Adoption figures come from company filings, official releases or independent surveys, linked in each entry. We compared documented features and published prices; we did not run hands-on tests. Scoring method
This list is for people in the US who send money to friends and family and want to compare how many people use each app, how much money moves through it and what it charges. Each app is scored on documented features (35 percent), adoption backed by user counts or payment volume from SEC filings and company releases (35 percent) and value based on published fees (30 percent). The core payment is free on most apps here, so value mostly turns on card funding fees, instant withdrawal fees and international fees. We compared documented features and published prices and did not run hands-on tests. Fees change, so check the current schedule before you send.
AssessmentZelle ranks first because it moves the most money, more than $1.2 trillion in 2025, typically charges nothing and sends between bank accounts in minutes, though both people need a US bank account. Cash App is second, with 60 million monthly transacting actives and a $0 monthly fee, plus a debit card and direct deposit. PayPal has the largest user base at 440 million active accounts and can pay Venmo users, but charges 2.90% plus a fixed fee for card-funded payments. Venmo is the social default for splitting costs, with free bank and debit funded payments. Revolut and Wise are the picks when money crosses borders, Chime suits its own banking members, Apple Cash is free between iPhone users, and Remitly serves families sending money abroad.

Zelle
Bank-to-bank payment network built into more than 2,400 US bank and credit union apps.
9.0overallBank-to-bank payment network built into more than 2,400 US bank and credit union apps.
Best forPeople who already bank with a US bank or credit union and want free transfers that usually arrive in minutes.
Adoption data
$1.2 trillionZelle says American consumers and small businesses sent more than $1.2 trillion through the network in 2025, up 20% from 2024.
Early Warning Services (Zelle), Zelle Posts 20% Growth with $1.2 Trillion Sent, Far Outpacing Consumer Spending and Cementing Its Role in the U.S. Economy (2025): “In 2025, American consumers and small businesses sent more than $1.2 trillion using Zelle®, marking the second consecutive trillion-dollar year and delivering 20% year-over-year growth in total dollars sent.”
Zelle works differently from the other apps here. There is no wallet balance to top up or cash out: money moves between two bank accounts through the sender's own banking app, and Zelle says it is available in more than 2,400 bank and credit union apps. Transfers to enrolled recipients typically arrive within minutes. Zelle's FAQ says there are typically no consumer fees, and a Q1 2026 survey of participating institutions found 99.40% of linked consumer accounts charge nothing to send, receive or request. Scale is the strongest on this list: more than $1.2 trillion sent in 2025, 4.2 billion transactions and a record 100 million accounts used in December. The trade-offs are structural. Both people need an eligible US bank account, limits come from your bank, and there is no card, rewards or purchase protection layer on top.
Strengths
- +Largest payment volume on this list
- +No fee at 99.40% of linked consumer accounts, per a Q1 2026 bank survey
- +No separate balance to cash out
Limitations
- −Both people need an eligible US bank account
- −Limits and any fees are set by your bank
- −Requests only work with enrolled users
SummaryZelle is the best pick for free, fast transfers between people who both bank in the US. It moves more money than any other service here and usually costs nothing.

8.9overallBlock's money app for sending money, a debit card, direct deposit, bitcoin and borrowing.
Best forPeople who want one app for peer payments, a free debit card and paychecks, especially gig and hourly earners.
Adoption data
60 millionBlock reports that Cash App reached 60 million monthly transacting actives in September 2026.
Block, Inc., Block Q3 2026 Shareholder Letter (Form 8-K Exhibit 99.1) (2026): “Cash App reached 60 million monthly transacting actives in September with Neighborhoods playing a key role in actives growth this quarter.”
Cash App has grown from a peer-to-peer app into a full money app, and Block's third-quarter 2026 letter says it reached 60 million monthly transacting actives in September. Sending money from your balance or a linked debit card carries no fee, while sending from a credit card costs 3%. The fee schedule in Cash App's terms lists a $0 monthly fee and $0 per purchase, with Instant Transfer withdrawals priced from 0.5% to 2.5% and capped at $75. Standard transfers to a linked account are free and typically arrive within three business days. Around the payments sit a Cash App Card debit card, which Block says 28 million monthly actives used in September, direct deposit, bitcoin and lending. Block also notes that an estimated 70% of monthly actives earn through freelancing, gig or hourly work, which shapes its roadmap. Costs to watch are the $2.50 Cash App ATM fee and instant withdrawal charges.
Strengths
- +60 million monthly transacting actives
- +No monthly fee on the balance
- +Broad money features beyond payments
Limitations
- −3% fee to send from a credit card
- −$2.50 Cash App ATM withdrawal fee, plus operator fees

PayPal
Global digital wallet for paying friends, shopping online and sending money abroad.
8.9overallGlobal digital wallet for paying friends, shopping online and sending money abroad.
Best forPeople who pay friends and also shop online or send money to other countries from one account.
Adoption data
440 millionPayPal reports 440 million active accounts at the end of the third quarter of 2026, up 0.6% from a year earlier.
PayPal Holdings, Inc., PayPal Reports Third Quarter 2026 Results (Form 8-K Exhibit 99.1) (2026): “Active accounts increased 0.6% to 440 million.”
PayPal is the broadest account on this list, with 440 million active accounts and $487.1 billion in total payment volume in the third quarter of 2026, though that volume covers merchant checkout as well as personal payments. Its US consumer fee page lists no fee for domestic personal transactions funded by a PayPal balance or bank account, and 2.90% plus a fixed fee when a card is used. Friends and Family payments can go to PayPal or Venmo users, which helps when the people you pay prefer Venmo. Standard withdrawals to a linked bank cost nothing, and Instant transfers to a bank cost 1.75% of the amount, with a 0.25 USD minimum and 25.00 USD maximum. Sending to another country adds a 5.00% international fee between 0.99 and 4.99 USD. That makes PayPal convenient for global payments but more expensive than Wise or Remitly for regular transfers abroad.
Strengths
- +440 million active accounts worldwide
- +Can pay Venmo users from PayPal
- +Works for both friends and online checkout
Limitations
- −Card-funded personal payments cost 2.90% plus a fixed fee
- −International personal payments add 5.00% (0.99 to 4.99 USD)
- −Instant withdrawals cost 1.75%
SummaryPayPal is the best fit for people who want one wallet for friends, shopping and occasional payments abroad. Its fees are clear but higher than the bank-funded rivals once cards or currency are involved.

Venmo
PayPal's social payment app for splitting costs with friends, with a debit card and teen accounts.
8.9overallPayPal's social payment app for splitting costs with friends, with a debit card and teen accounts.
Best forFriend groups in the US that split meals, rent and trips and want a social feed and free bank or debit funding.
Adoption data
$1.7 billionPayPal reports that Venmo revenue grew about 20% to $1.7 billion in 2025.
PayPal Holdings, Inc., PayPal Holdings 2026 Proxy Statement (Form DEF 14A) (2025): “Advanced Venmo monetization, growing revenue approximately 20% to $1.7 billion.”
Venmo is the app many US friend groups already use to split dinners, rent and trips. Its fee page lists no fee to send money to a Venmo or US PayPal account from your Venmo balance, debit card or bank account, and a 3.00% fee when you use a credit card. Standard withdrawals are free and typically land in 1 to 3 business days; Instant Transfer costs 1.75%, with a $0.25 minimum and $25 maximum. The app also offers a Venmo Debit Card, a teen debit card, a credit card, business payments and crypto. PayPal does not publish a Venmo user count in its SEC filings, but its 2026 proxy statement says Venmo revenue grew about 20% to $1.7 billion in 2025. Watch the costs at the edges: 5.00% to pay non-US PayPal accounts, a $3.74 fee to add cash at stores, and card fees.
Strengths
- +No fee for bank, debit or balance funded payments
- +Can pay US PayPal accounts
- +Teen debit card for families
Limitations
- −3% fee for credit card funded payments
- −Sending to non-US PayPal accounts costs 5.00%
- −$3.74 fee to add cash at stores
SummaryVenmo is a strong default for splitting costs with friends in the US. Bank and debit funded payments are free and it can pay PayPal users too.

Revolut
Global financial app with a free Standard plan, high-yield savings and multi-currency spending.
8.5overallGlobal financial app with a free Standard plan, high-yield savings and multi-currency spending.
Best forTravelers and people with friends abroad who want a free plan with currency exchange and optional paid tiers.
Adoption data
68.3 millionRevolut says its retail customer base grew 30% to 68.3 million worldwide in 2025.
Revolut, Revolut reports record profit of $2.3bn for 2025 as revenue surges to $6bn (2025): “Total customer balances surged 66% to $67.5bn (£50.2bn) as retail customer base grew by 30% to 68.3 million and business customers increased 33% to 767K.”
Revolut is a global finance app rather than a pure payment app, and it is most useful when your friends or travel plans span currencies. The US pricing page lists a Standard plan at $0.00 per month, Premium at $9.99 and Metal at $16.99. Standard includes currency exchange up to $1,000 a month, with a 1% fee outside foreign-exchange market hours, while Premium raises the limit to $10,000 and Metal removes it. High Yield Savings through Cross River Bank pays 3.5% to 4% APY depending on plan, and every plan supports five linked Kids and Teens accounts. Revolut reports 68.3 million retail customers worldwide in 2025, but most are outside the US, where it says it is not a bank and has filed for a national bank charter. For paying US friends who use Venmo or Zelle, Revolut is less convenient than those networks.
Strengths
- +68.3 million retail customers worldwide
- +Free plan with currency exchange
- +Paid plans add travel insurance and higher limits
Limitations
- −Revolut is not a bank in the US
- −Standard plan exchange is capped at $1,000 per month
- −1% exchange fee outside market hours on Standard
SummaryRevolut fits people who split costs across countries and want exchange and savings in one free app. US users should expect a smaller local network than Zelle or Venmo.

Wise
International account for sending, holding and converting money at the mid-market rate.
8.3overallInternational account for sending, holding and converting money at the mid-market rate.
Best forPeople sending money to friends or family in other countries who want low, upfront fees.
Adoption data
19 millionWise says it served nearly 19 million customers in its 2026 fiscal year.
Wise plc, Wise investor relations (2026): “we served nearly 19 million customers in FY26”
Wise is built for money that crosses borders. Its US pricing page says you only pay for what you use, with no subscriptions or plans, and lists sending and conversion fees from 0.23% depending on currency, at the mid-market exchange rate. Registering is free, holding money is free, and sending the same currency between contacts on Wise costs nothing, which makes it handy when friends abroad also use it. You get account details to receive money in 22 currencies, and the Multi-Currency Card costs 9 USD once with no subscription fee. Wise reports nearly 19 million customers and $243.4 billion in cross-border volume in fiscal 2026. The limits are practical: fees vary by corridor, receiving a USD wire costs 6.11 USD, and for paying a US roommate who is not on Wise, Zelle or Venmo is simpler.
Strengths
- +Low, published conversion fees
- +No subscriptions or plans
- +Free transfers between Wise users
Limitations
- −Fees vary by currency
- −6.11 USD fee to receive USD wire and Swift payments
- −Not built for everyday US splitting with non-Wise users
SummaryWise is the pick for sending money to people abroad at a fair rate. For domestic splitting it adds little over the free US networks.

Chime
US mobile banking app with Pay Anyone transfers, MyPay advances and a debit card.
7.8overallUS mobile banking app with Pay Anyone transfers, MyPay advances and a debit card.
Best forPeople who bank with Chime and want to send money to other people from the same app.
Adoption data
10.9 millionChime reports 10.9 million Active Members in the third quarter of 2026, up 20% from a year earlier.
Chime Financial, Inc., Chime Third Quarter 2026 Results (Form 8-K Exhibit 99.1) (2026): “Active Members grew 20% year over year to 10.9 million.”
Chime is a mobile banking app first, and person-to-person payments come through its Pay Anyone feature, which Chime lists alongside card purchases, ATM withdrawals and MyPay advances as the money movement that defines an Active Member. Chime reports 10.9 million Active Members in the third quarter of 2026, up 20% year over year, after a record 1.8 million net additions over the past 12 months. Around payments it offers Chime-branded debit and credit cards, MyPay pay advances, which reached $5.3 billion in quarterly origination volume, Instant Loans and a Chime Prime tier. That makes it useful if Chime is already where your paycheck lands. Chime's website did not load from our location, so we could not confirm its current fee schedule in USD and have marked pricing as pending. Confirm Pay Anyone terms in the app before you rely on it.
Strengths
- +10.9 million Active Members, up 20%
- +Payments sit inside a full checking app
- +Record 1.8 million net new members over 12 months
Limitations
- −Fee schedule could not be checked from our location
- −Best when both people use Chime
- −Smaller network than Zelle, Venmo or Cash App
SummaryChime makes sense for people who already bank there and want payments in the same app. Its network is smaller than the dedicated payment apps.
- 8

Apple Cash
Digital card in Apple Wallet for sending and receiving money in Messages and Wallet.
7.5overallDigital card in Apple Wallet for sending and receiving money in Messages and Wallet.
Best foriPhone users who pay other iPhone users and want free payments without a separate app.
Apple Cash is the simplest option for iPhone users paying other iPhone users, because it lives in Wallet and Messages with no extra app. Apple's support page says there is no fee to send, receive or request money with Apple Cash, and setting it up does not affect your credit. Moving money out takes 1 to 3 business days to a bank account at no cost, or you can use Instant Transfer to an eligible debit card for 1.7% of the amount, with a $0.25 minimum and $25 maximum. Apple Cash Family lets parents set up accounts for younger members of a Family Sharing group. The main limit is reach: it only works on Apple devices, so Android friends need another app. Apple does not publish an Apple Cash user count, so we scored adoption conservatively.
Strengths
- +Free payments built into iPhone
- +No effect on credit to set up
- +Family accounts for younger users
Limitations
- −Works only on Apple devices
- −Instant Transfer costs 1.7% ($0.25 to $25)
- −Apple publishes no user count
SummaryApple Cash is free and quick for payments between iPhone users. Its Apple-only reach and lack of published usage data keep it lower in the ranking.
- 9

Remitly
International money transfer app for sending money from the US to more than 175 countries.
7.3overallInternational money transfer app for sending money from the US to more than 175 countries.
Best forPeople sending money to family abroad who want bank deposit, mobile wallet or cash pickup options.
Adoption data
10.3 millionRemitly reports 10.3 million active customers in the third quarter of 2026, up 17% from 8.9 million a year earlier.
Remitly Global, Inc., Remitly Reports Record Third Quarter Results (Form 8-K Exhibit 99.1) (2026): “Active customers increased to 10.3 million, compared to 8.9 million, up 17%.”
Remitly is a remittance service rather than a friend-splitting app, so it belongs on this list for people who send money to family in other countries. Its US site lists sending to more than 175 countries in over 100 currencies, with delivery to bank accounts, mobile wallets or cash pickup, and a promise to refund the transfer fee if money arrives late. Support runs in 18 languages. Remitly reports 10.3 million active customers and $24.4 billion in send volume in the third quarter of 2026, up 17% and 25% from a year earlier. Fees and exchange rates depend on the corridor and delivery method and are shown in the send flow rather than on a single schedule, so we could not record a verified USD price and have marked pricing as pending. Compare its quote with Wise for your corridor before sending.
Strengths
- +10.3 million active customers, up 17%
- +$24.4 billion send volume in Q3 2026
- +Delivery time guarantee
Limitations
- −Fees and rates vary by corridor
- −Not for splitting costs inside the US
- −Fee schedule could not be confirmed in USD from our location
SummaryRemitly fits people who send money to family abroad and need cash pickup or mobile wallet delivery. For transfers inside the US, the free domestic apps are better.
Choosing a product
- Fund payments from a bank or balance, not a credit card
- Sending from a bank account, debit card or app balance is free on Zelle, Cash App, PayPal, Venmo and Apple Cash. Credit cards are where fees start: 3% on Cash App, 3.00% on Venmo and 2.90% plus a fixed fee on PayPal.
- Count the cost of getting money out fast
- Standard withdrawals to a bank are free on Venmo, PayPal and Apple Cash but take 1 to 3 business days. Instant withdrawals cost 1.75% on Venmo and PayPal, 1.7% on Apple Cash and 0.5% to 2.5% on Cash App. Zelle avoids the step because money lands straight in the recipient's bank account.
- Pick the network your friends already use
- A payment app only helps if the other person is on it. Zelle is built into more than 2,400 bank and credit union apps, PayPal can pay Venmo users, and Apple Cash works only on Apple devices. Chime transfers are most useful between Chime members.
- Use a specialist for money sent abroad
- PayPal adds a 5.00% international fee (0.99 to 4.99 USD) to personal payments abroad. Wise lists conversion fees from 0.23% at the mid-market rate, and Remitly sends to more than 175 countries with cash pickup and mobile wallet options. Compare quotes for your corridor.
- Read adoption numbers by their units
- Apps report scale differently. Zelle reports dollars sent, PayPal counts active accounts, Block counts Cash App monthly transacting actives, Chime counts Active Members, Remitly counts active customers, and PayPal reports Venmo revenue rather than users. Revolut and Wise figures are worldwide, not US only.
