Adoption figures come from company filings, official releases or independent surveys, linked in each entry. We compared documented features and published prices; we did not run hands-on tests. Scoring method

This list is for people in the US choosing an exchange or app to buy, sell and hold crypto. Each exchange is scored on documented features (35 percent), adoption backed by verified user counts, funded accounts or disclosed trading volumes from SEC filings and company reports (35 percent) and value based on published trading fees and plan prices (30 percent). Exchanges report scale in different units, so we cite the exact metric each one discloses. We compared documented features and published prices and did not run hands-on tests. Fees and state availability change, so confirm the current schedule on the exchange's own fee page before you deposit money.

AssessmentCoinbase ranks first because it pairs the largest disclosed user base on this list, 7.4 million monthly transacting users in the third quarter of 2026, with a broad product set and a subscription that removes trading fees on hundreds of assets from $4.99 per month. Kraken is a near tie in second place, with 6.6 million funded accounts, $310 billion in second quarter transaction volume and the same $4.99 monthly price for Kraken+. Robinhood Crypto suits investors who already use Robinhood, with fee tiers from 0.00% to 0.95% and $21 billion of app crypto volume in the third quarter. Crypto.com has the largest self-reported user count at 150 million, eToro adds crypto to a multi-asset account, Bitstamp offers a plain maker-taker schedule, Binance.US has the lowest posted fees, Gemini fits buyers who value a long regulatory record, and Uphold is the simplest but most expensive option.

  1. 1

    Coinbase

    9.1overall

The largest US-listed crypto exchange, with a simple app, Coinbase Advanced for order book trading and the Coinbase One subscription.

Best forUS buyers who want a large, publicly reported exchange with simple buying and an optional fee-free plan.

    Adoption data

7.4 millionCoinbase reported 7.4 million monthly transacting users for the third quarter of 2026, down from 9.3 million a year earlier.

Coinbase Global (SEC Form 10-Q), Coinbase Global, Inc. Form 10-Q for the quarter ended September 30, 2026 (2026): “For the three and nine months ended September 30, 2026, Monthly Transacting Users (“MTUs”) were 7.4 million and 7.7 million.”

Coinbase is the default choice for many US crypto buyers, and its filings show why: the company reported 7.4 million monthly transacting users in the third quarter of 2026, the largest audited user figure on this list. The main app handles simple buys, Coinbase Advanced adds an order book with maker and taker fee tiers, and the same account reaches staking, derivatives and prediction markets, which Coinbase says passed $200 million in annualized revenue. Its fee model is the Coinbase One subscription. The Basic tier costs $4.99 per month or $49.99 per year and waives trading fees on hundreds of assets up to $500 a month, while Preferred at $29.99 and Premium at $299.99 raise that limit and add rebates on Advanced spot fees. Spreads still apply on fee-free trades. The weak points are the low Basic trading cap and the fact that Advanced fee rates appear only after you sign in. Users also fell from 9.3 million a year earlier as trading cooled.

    Strengths

    • +Largest disclosed monthly user base on this list
    • +Public company with quarterly SEC reporting
    • +Subscription removes trading fees on eligible simple trades

    Limitations

    • −Coinbase One Basic covers only up to $500 of trading per month
    • −Advanced fee rates are shown only after you sign in
    • −Monthly transacting users fell from 9.3 million a year earlier

SummaryCoinbase is the best all-round crypto exchange for US buyers who want scale and simple tools. Heavy traders should compare the Coinbase One tier limits with Kraken and Binance.US fees.

  2. 2

    Kraken

    9.0overall

Long-running exchange with Kraken Pro, margin, perps, staking and US stock trading, plus the Kraken+ subscription.

Best forActive traders who want spot, margin and derivatives in one account with an optional fee-free plan for simple buys.

    Adoption data

6.6 millionKraken's parent Payward reported 6.6 million funded accounts at the end of the second quarter of 2026, up 42% from a year earlier.

Payward, Q2 2026 Payward Financial Highlights (2026): “Funded Accounts grew 42% year over year to 6.6 million.”

Kraken is the strongest pick on this list for people who trade more than they hold. Kraken Pro covers spot, margin and perpetual futures, the app handles simple buys and staking, and US clients can also trade more than 11,000 US-listed stocks and ETFs commission-free in the same account. Scale is close to Coinbase: parent company Payward reported 6.6 million funded accounts in the second quarter of 2026, up 42% from a year earlier, and $310 billion in total transaction volume. Without a subscription, Kraken charges 1% on instant and recurring buys and 1.5% on custom orders, which is expensive for small purchases. Kraken+ fixes that for $4.99 per month after a 30-day trial, waiving trading fees on up to $10,000 of monthly buys, sells and converts, though spreads and card fees still apply. The plan does not cover Kraken Pro or API trades, so active traders pay Pro rates there.

    Strengths

    • +Broadest trading product range on this list
    • +Kraken+ covers far more volume than Coinbase One Basic
    • +Funded accounts grew 42% year over year

    Limitations

    • −1% fee on instant buys and 1.5% on custom orders without Kraken+
    • −Kraken+ excludes Kraken Pro, API and OTC trades
    • −Perps are available only in certain regions

SummaryKraken is the best crypto exchange for active traders who want derivatives and stocks next to spot crypto. Kraken+ makes it the better value of the two $4.99 plans for buyers who spend more than $500 a month.

  3. 3

    Robinhood Crypto

    8.8overall

Crypto trading inside the Robinhood investing app, with volume-based fee tiers and a self-custody wallet.

Best forRobinhood stock investors who want to add crypto to the same app.

    Adoption data

$21 billionRobinhood reported $21 billion of crypto notional trading volume in its app in the third quarter of 2026, part of $50 billion including Bitstamp.

Robinhood Markets (SEC Form 8-K, Exhibit 99.1), Robinhood Reports Third Quarter 2026 Results (2026): “Crypto Notional Trading Volumes decreased 38% year-over-year to $50 billion, including Robinhood App Notional Volumes which decreased 48% year-over-year to $21 billion, and Bitstamp Notional Volumes which decreased 28% year-over-year to $29 billion.”

Robinhood Crypto makes the most sense for the many investors who already hold stocks on Robinhood. Crypto sits in the same app as stocks, options and retirement accounts, and Robinhood's third quarter 2026 results counted 28.7 million funded customers across the platform. Crypto activity is substantial but cooling: the Robinhood app handled $21 billion of crypto notional volume in the quarter, down 48% from a year earlier, while the separately run Bitstamp exchange added $29 billion. On fees, orders placed with exchange routing qualify for tiers based on trailing 30-day volume, and Robinhood states that fees range from 0.00% to 0.95%, so occasional small buyers sit at the top of that range. Staking and the Robinhood Wallet for self-custody round out the offer. The trade-off is depth: active crypto traders get fewer order types than on Kraken Pro or Coinbase Advanced, and crypto held here is not FDIC insured or SIPC protected.

    Strengths

    • +One app for stocks and crypto, with 28.7 million funded customers overall
    • +Fee rate falls as 30-day volume rises
    • +Large disclosed crypto volume

    Limitations

    • −App crypto volume fell 48% year over year
    • −Fewer advanced crypto order types than Kraken Pro or Coinbase Advanced
    • −Crypto is not FDIC insured or SIPC protected

SummaryRobinhood Crypto is the easiest way for existing Robinhood investors to add crypto. Dedicated traders will find more tools on Kraken or Coinbase.

  4. 4

    Crypto.com

    8.6overall

Global crypto app and exchange with cards, stocks, prediction markets, IRAs and Cash Earn for US users.

Best forBuyers who want crypto, a card and rewards in one app.

    Adoption data

150MCrypto.com states on its company page that it has 150 million users in 90 countries; this is a self-reported global count, not an audited US figure.

    Crypto.com, About Us | Crypto.com (2026): “150M Users”

Crypto.com is built for people who want their crypto to sit next to everyday money tools. The US app combines crypto buying with a Visa Signature credit card, stocks, prediction markets and IRAs, and the separate Crypto.com Exchange gives order book trading for advanced users. Its Cash Earn program pays a US APY of 3.00% on the Basic tier up to 4.00% on Private as of June 1, 2026, though interest is paid in CRO, whose value can change. Scale is large on paper: the company's own about page lists 150 million users across 90 countries, the biggest figure here, but it is a self-reported global number rather than an audited US metric, so we score adoption below Coinbase. We could not confirm a USD trading fee quote on its US help pages during this check, so its price is marked pending. Compare the fee shown at checkout with Binance.US or Bitstamp before you trade large amounts.

    Strengths

    • +Largest self-reported user count on this list
    • +Broad product set beyond trading
    • +Separate exchange for order book trading

    Limitations

    • −User count is self-reported and global, not an audited US figure
    • −Cash Earn interest is paid in CRO, whose value can change
    • −We could not confirm a USD trading fee quote on its US fee pages

SummaryCrypto.com suits buyers who want a card, rewards and crypto in one app. Fee-focused traders should confirm its rates against Binance.US and Bitstamp first.

  5. 5

    eToro

    8.2overall

Multi-asset investing platform that adds crypto trading, staking and recurring buys to stocks and ETFs.

Best forInvestors who want crypto and stocks on one Nasdaq-listed platform with a flat, disclosed crypto fee.

    Adoption data

4.28 millioneToro reported 4.28 million funded accounts worldwide in the second quarter of 2026, up 18% from 3.63 million a year earlier.

eToro Group (SEC Form 6-K, Exhibit 99.1), eToro Reports Second Quarter 2026 Results (2026): “Funded Accounts increased 18% year over year to 4.28 million compared to 3.63 million in the second quarter of 2025.”

eToro is a multi-asset platform first and a crypto exchange second, which suits investors who want one account for stocks, ETFs and coins. Its US fee page states a flat 1% fee for buying or selling crypto, and since mid-July 2025 that fee has been shown as a separate cost before the trade and on statements rather than folded into the spread. The crypto page adds staking with monthly rewards, free custody and recurring buys from $25 per month. eToro is listed on Nasdaq and reported 4.28 million funded accounts worldwide in the second quarter of 2026, up 18% from a year earlier, with $19.2 billion in assets under administration. The limits are cost and reach. A 1% fee is far above the 0.02% taker rate at Binance.US or Bitstamp's 0.40% entry tier, and crypto trading is not offered in Nevada, Hawaii, Puerto Rico or the US Virgin Islands. The funded account figure also covers all countries.

    Strengths

    • +Fee is disclosed as a separate line, not hidden in the spread
    • +Public company with quarterly results
    • +Funded accounts grew 18% year over year

    Limitations

    • −1% fee is high next to order book exchanges
    • −Crypto trading not available in Nevada, Hawaii, Puerto Rico and the US Virgin Islands
    • −Funded account count is global, not US only

SummaryeToro is a sound pick for investors who want crypto next to stocks with a clearly disclosed fee. Cost-sensitive traders will pay less on an order book exchange.

  6. 6

    Bitstamp

    8.0overall

One of the oldest crypto exchanges, now owned by Robinhood, with a published maker-taker fee schedule.

Best forTraders who want a plain order book exchange with clear volume tiers and a long audit history.

    Adoption data

$29 billionRobinhood reported $29 billion of Bitstamp notional trading volume in the third quarter of 2026, down 28% from a year earlier.

Robinhood Markets (SEC Form 8-K, Exhibit 99.1), Robinhood Reports Third Quarter 2026 Results (2026): “Bitstamp Notional Volumes which decreased 28% year-over-year to $29 billion.”

Bitstamp is a straightforward order book exchange with one of the cleanest public fee tables in crypto. Under $10,000 of trailing 30-day volume, it charges 0.30% for maker orders and 0.40% for taker orders, and rates step down through 11 tiers to 0.00% maker and 0.03% taker above $1 billion. Stablecoin and FX pairs carry lower rates. Bitstamp now operates as Bitstamp by Robinhood, and Robinhood's third quarter 2026 results show $29 billion of Bitstamp notional volume, more than the Robinhood app itself, though down 28% from a year earlier. Bitstamp says customer crypto and fiat are kept apart from corporate funds and that a Big Four firm has audited it every year since 2016. The downsides are price and scope for small buyers: the entry taker fee is far above Binance.US, and the product is lighter on cards, rewards and extras. Bitstamp has also posted fee schedule changes taking effect on November 24, 2026.

    Strengths

    • +Clear, public fee table
    • +Long audit record
    • +Backed by Robinhood's balance sheet and reporting

    Limitations

    • −0.40% entry taker fee is well above Binance.US
    • −Fewer consumer extras than Coinbase or Crypto.com
    • −Fee schedule changes on November 24, 2026

SummaryBitstamp suits traders who want a simple, well-audited order book with transparent tiers. Small buyers will pay less at Binance.US.

  7. 7

    Binance.US

    7.9overall

US exchange with 200+ cryptocurrencies and the lowest posted trading fees on this list.

Best forCost-focused traders who place frequent order book trades.

Binance.US is the clear low-cost choice. Its fee page lists a 0% maker fee with no subscription or volume requirement, a 0.02% taker fee on most pairs that drops to 0.01% above $500 million of monthly volume, and 0% maker and 0.01% taker on BNB/USD. Paying fees in BNB takes another 5% off, and ACH deposits and withdrawals are free. For someone placing a $1,000 market order, that is 20 cents against $4 at Bitstamp's entry tier or $10 at a 1% exchange. The homepage lists more than 200 cryptocurrencies, staking on 25 or more assets and a $1 minimum to start. The weakness is transparency about scale. Binance.US is private and publishes no audited user count or trading volume, saying only that it is trusted by millions of Americans, so we score adoption conservatively. It also offers fewer extras than Coinbase, Kraken or Crypto.com.

    Strengths

    • +Lowest posted trading fees on this list
    • +No subscription needed for low fees
    • +Start with as little as $1

    Limitations

    • −No audited user count or volume disclosure
    • −Says only that it is trusted by millions of Americans
    • −Fewer extras such as cards or stock trading

SummaryBinance.US is the best value crypto exchange for frequent traders who care most about fees. Buyers who want disclosed scale or more products should look at Coinbase or Kraken.

  8. 8

    Gemini

    7.8overall

New York-based, Nasdaq-listed exchange with ActiveTrader, a crypto credit card, staking, custody and prediction markets.

Best forBuyers who put a regulated trust company and custody first.

    Adoption data

580,000Gemini reported 580,000 monthly transacting users in the second quarter of 2026, up 11% from a year earlier.

Gemini Space Station (SEC Form 8-K, Exhibit 99.1), Gemini Reports Second Quarter 2026 Results (2026): “Monthly Transacting Users were up 11% year-over-year to 580,000.”

Gemini fits buyers who care most about the regulatory wrapper around their coins. Accounts run through Gemini Trust Company, and the company, now listed on Nasdaq, offers custody, staking, a crypto credit card, perpetuals and prediction markets alongside its exchange. Its ActiveTrader schedule, effective September 1, 2026, starts at 0.600% maker and 1.200% taker and falls as either 30-day volume or total asset balance rises, which helps large holders who trade rarely. RLUSD/USD and GUSD/USD pairs trade at 0.00%. The numbers in Gemini's second quarter 2026 results are mixed: monthly transacting users rose 11% to 580,000, the smallest audited user count on this list, while total trading volume fell to $3.8 billion from $11.3 billion a year earlier and assets on platform dropped to $8.4 billion. The entry taker rate is three times Bitstamp's and far above Binance.US.

    Strengths

    • +Operates through Gemini Trust Company, a regulated trust
    • +Fee tier can be set by asset balance, not only volume
    • +Users grew 11% year over year

    Limitations

    • −Highest order book entry fees here at 1.200% taker
    • −Smallest audited user base on this list
    • −Trading volume fell to $3.8 billion from $11.3 billion a year earlier

SummaryGemini suits buyers who value a trust company structure and custody over low fees. Frequent traders will pay much less on Binance.US or Bitstamp.

  9. 9

    Uphold

    6.7overall

Multi-asset app for crypto, stablecoins and precious metals, priced through a spread rather than a separate fee.

Best forBuyers who want simple conversions across 300+ assets and accept a wider spread.

Uphold is a convenience pick for people who want to hop between many assets in one app. It lists more than 300 cryptoassets plus stablecoins and precious metals, offers Autopilot rule-based strategies, a debit card, direct deposit with auto-invest and a cash account that it says pays up to 4% APY. Uphold also lists SOC 2 Type 2, ISO 27001 and PCI DSS certifications. Pricing is the catch. Uphold builds its fee into the spread, and its service fee page puts the typical rate for trades up to $5,000 at 2.00% to 2.20% on bitcoin and ether and 2.45% to 3.8% on altcoins, with larger trades possibly costing more. That is roughly 100 times the Binance.US taker fee and twice Kraken's instant buy fee. Conversions between US dollars and supported USD stablecoins are free. Uphold does not publish an audited user count, saying only that it is used by millions worldwide, so adoption is scored conservatively.

    Strengths

    • +Wide asset range including precious metals
    • +Free conversion between USD and supported stablecoins
    • +SOC 2 Type 2, ISO 27001 and PCI DSS certified

    Limitations

    • −Most expensive bitcoin and ether pricing on this list
    • −No audited user count or volume disclosure
    • −Larger trades may incur higher spreads

SummaryUphold is easy to use and covers a wide asset list, but its spreads are the highest here. Pick it for breadth, not for price.

Choosing a product

Compare the fee you will actually pay
Exchanges charge in three ways: maker-taker fees on an order book, a flat percentage on simple buys, or a spread built into the price. Binance.US lists 0% maker and 0.02% taker on most pairs, Bitstamp starts at 0.30% maker and 0.40% taker under $10,000 of monthly volume, Gemini's ActiveTrader base tier is 0.600% maker and 1.200% taker, Kraken charges 1% on instant buys and eToro charges 1% per crypto trade. Uphold's typical spread on bitcoin and ether trades up to $5,000 is 2.00% to 2.20%.
Decide whether a subscription pays off
Coinbase One and Kraken+ both cost $4.99 per month and waive trading fees on simple buys, though spreads still apply. Kraken+ covers up to $10,000 of monthly volume, and Coinbase One Basic covers up to $500 of trading per month according to its plan table. If you buy less than a few hundred dollars a month, the subscription may cost more than the fees it removes.
Read adoption numbers by their units
Coinbase and Gemini report monthly transacting users, Kraken and eToro report funded accounts, Robinhood reports notional trading volume for its app and for Bitstamp, and Crypto.com publishes a global user count on its own site. Funded accounts and transacting users are stricter measures than sign-ups, so a smaller audited figure can mean more real activity than a larger self-reported one.
Check state availability and product limits
Not every product is offered in every state. eToro does not offer crypto trading in Nevada, Hawaii, Puerto Rico and the US Virgin Islands, Kraken notes that perps are available only in certain regions, and staking, margin and derivatives often have separate eligibility rules. Confirm your state before you fund an account.
Look at custody and security disclosures
Bitstamp says customer crypto and fiat are held separately from corporate funds and that a Big Four accounting firm has audited it each year since 2016, Uphold lists SOC 2 Type 2 and ISO 27001 certifications, and Kraken and Crypto.com publish proof of reserves pages. Crypto held on an exchange is not FDIC insured or SIPC protected, as Robinhood states in its own disclosures.
