Cryptocurrency Statistics 2026

About 1 in 10 US adults use crypto: the Federal Reserve counted 10% in 2025, Gallup 9% owners in 2026, and Pew Research Center found 19% have ever used it, led by men under 50. Total crypto market capitalization was $2.96 trillion at the end of September 2026 according to CoinGecko, stablecoins made up about $300 billion of it, and crypto investment products drew $47.2 billion of inflows in 2025 per CoinShares. Fraud is the biggest cost: the FBI logged $11.4 billion in reported crypto losses in 2025, $7.2 billion of it from investment scams.

Analysis

This page collects statistics on cryptocurrency: who owns it by country, age and gender, how large the market is, how much is held in stablecoins, how much money flows through crypto ETFs, and how much people lose to scams and theft. Figures describe 2025 and 2026 and come from central banks and regulators (Federal Reserve, European Central Bank, Bank for International Settlements, UK Financial Conduct Authority), the FBI, survey organizations (Pew Research Center, Gallup), blockchain analytics firm Chainalysis, data provider CoinGecko, asset manager CoinShares and the SEC filings of Coinbase and Circle. Most survey data cover the United States and the United Kingdom; market and on-chain data are global.

Crypto ownership is common enough to matter but far from universal. The Federal Reserve's 2025 household survey found 10% of US adults used crypto, nearly all as an investment, and only 2% used it to pay for something or send money. Pew Research Center's broader question found 19% have ever invested in, traded or used crypto, while Gallup's September 2026 poll put current ownership at 9%, down from 14% a year earlier. The UK shows the same pattern: the Financial Conduct Authority measured a fall from 12% to 8% of adults holding cryptoassets in 2025.

Ownership is concentrated among young men in every survey that reports it. Pew found 40% of US men aged 30 to 49 and 38% of men aged 18 to 29 have used crypto, compared with 15% to 17% of women the same age, and the FCA found 15% of UK adults aged 18 to 34 hold cryptoassets. By on-chain activity, Chainalysis found Asia-Pacific growing fastest in the year to June 2025, with regional transaction volume reaching $2.36 trillion.

The market itself has swung widely. CoinGecko put total market capitalization at $2.96 trillion at the end of September 2026, still 4.0% lower for the year despite a strong third quarter, and Coinbase reported customer assets of $376.6 billion against $515.9 billion a year earlier. Stablecoins have held steadier: the BIS counted about $320 billion in May 2026, almost all pegged to the US dollar, and the ECB found around 80% of trades on centralized exchanges involve them. Exchange-traded products are now a major channel, with CoinShares counting $47.2 billion of 2025 inflows and US spot Bitcoin ETFs holding $108 billion by September 2026.

Losses to fraud are large and rising. The FBI recorded $11.366 billion in crypto-related losses in 2025, 22% more than in 2024, with investment scams alone costing $7.2 billion and people aged 60 and over filing the most complaints. Chainalysis traced at least $14 billion to scam addresses and over $3.4 billion in theft in 2025, including $2.02 billion taken by North Korean hackers, and the Federal Reserve found 65% of crypto fraud victims never got their money back.

How many Americans own or use crypto

US surveys agree that crypto is held by a minority of adults, though the exact share depends on the question asked. The Federal Reserve found 10% of adults used crypto in 2025, mostly as an investment, while Pew Research Center's broader question about ever having invested in, traded or used crypto reached 19%. Gallup's 2026 reading of 9% current owners, down from 14% a year earlier, suggests the price fall since late 2025 has pushed some holders out. Use for payments stays rare at about 2% of adults, and the Fed notes that online surveys may overstate use of new technology.

Young men are the core crypto audience in every survey that breaks results out by age and gender. In Pew Research Center's 2026 data, 38% of men aged 18 to 29 and 40% of men aged 30 to 49 have used crypto, against 15% to 17% of women the same age, and Gallup and the UK Financial Conduct Authority report the same skew. Outside the US, the FCA measured a drop in UK ownership from 12% to 8% in 2025 even as holdings grew larger. Chainalysis measures on-chain activity rather than survey answers, and found Asia-Pacific growing fastest in the year to June 2025, led by India, Vietnam and Pakistan.

Crypto market capitalization and prices

The crypto market has been volatile through 2026. CoinGecko data show a strong third quarter, with the five largest coins up 40% to 71%, that left total market capitalization near $3 trillion but still slightly lower for the year. Coinbase's filings show what that means for the largest US exchange: customer assets on its platform fell by about $139 billion over twelve months, mostly from lower prices, and its quarterly revenue fell to $1.2 billion. Prices quoted here are snapshots at quarter end and can move by tens of percent within weeks.

Stablecoin supply and use

Stablecoins, tokens designed to hold a fixed value against a currency, have become the plumbing of the crypto market. The BIS put their market capitalization near $320 billion in May 2026, and CoinGecko's count was about $300 billion at the end of September, with supply flat while other crypto prices rose. Almost all of it is pegged to the US dollar, and two issuers, Tether and Circle, hold around 90% of the market. Headline transaction volumes are very large, but the BIS and ECB both stress that most of it is trading and internal transfers rather than payments by households or businesses.

Crypto scams, theft and losses

Fraud is where crypto's costs show up most clearly for households. The FBI received 181,565 complaints involving crypto in 2025 with reported losses of $11.4 billion, more than half of it from investment scams, and the Federal Reserve found crypto fraud victims were the most likely to lose money they never recovered. Chainalysis tracks the same problem on-chain: at least $14 billion flowed to scam addresses and over $3.4 billion was stolen in hacks in 2025. Reported losses undercount the total because many victims never file a complaint, and Chainalysis revises its estimates upward as it identifies more addresses.

Methodology

We selected figures from primary publishers: central banks and regulators (Federal Reserve Board, European Central Bank, Bank for International Settlements, UK Financial Conduct Authority), FBI complaint data, nationally representative surveys (Pew Research Center, Gallup), blockchain analytics (Chainalysis), market data (CoinGecko), fund flow data (CoinShares) and SEC filings by Coinbase and Circle. Every quote was copied from the source page and rechecked with an automated source checker. Survey questions differ: the Fed asks about use in the past year, Pew about ever having used crypto and Gallup about current ownership, so their percentages are not directly comparable. FBI figures count only losses that victims reported. Chainalysis estimates are lower bounds that it revises upward over time. Market capitalization, ETF assets and exchange assets change daily with prices, so they describe the date stated.
