Adoption figures come from company filings, official releases or independent surveys, linked in each entry. We compared documented features and published prices; we did not run hands-on tests. Scoring method
This list is for data and analytics leads choosing a BI tool for a company, and for finance or operations managers who need to justify the spend. We ranked ten products sold today on three measures: documented features (35 percent), adoption backed by a published figure such as an organization count, a customer count or a usage metric (35 percent), and value at US list prices (30 percent). We compared documented features and published prices from vendor pages and did not run hands-on tests. Prices were checked on 2026-11-06. Three vendors, Google (Looker), Sigma and Zoho, did not show a US dollar price we could confirm, so those entries are marked as pending. Products without a citable adoption figure received a conservative adoption score.
AssessmentMicrosoft Power BI ranks first because it combines the largest published user base on this list, over 375,000 organizations and 30 million monthly active users, with a low public price of $14 per user per month for Pro. Tableau is the strongest alternative for analysts who build visual explorations every day, with editions starting at $15 per user per month billed annually and a community of more than one million members. Metabase is the value pick: the open-source edition is free, and its cloud Starter plan costs $100 per month for 5 users. Qlik Cloud Analytics fits companies that want analytics and data integration from one vendor, Zoho Analytics fits small and midsize teams that already run Zoho apps, and ThoughtSpot leads on search and agent-driven questions. Sigma suits teams on Snowflake or Databricks, Amazon Quick Sight suits AWS shops with many dashboard readers, Looker suits companies that want a governed semantic layer, and Preset is a low-cost hosted Apache Superset.

Microsoft Power BI
Microsoft's self-service BI service for building, publishing and sharing reports, part of the Microsoft Fabric data platform.
9.4overallMicrosoft's self-service BI service for building, publishing and sharing reports, part of the Microsoft Fabric data platform.
Best forCompanies on Microsoft 365 that want a widely used BI tool at a low per-user price.
Adoption data
375,000Microsoft says Power BI is used by over 375,000 organizations worldwide, the largest organization count published by any vendor on this list.
Microsoft, Power BI 2025 holiday recap: A decade of innovation and impact (2025): “When Power BI was launched a decade ago, it had about 500,000 early adopters: today it’s used by over 375,000 organizations worldwide.”
Power BI is the default BI choice for many companies because it sits inside the Microsoft stack that their staff already use. A free account lets anyone build reports in Power BI Desktop, and Pro, at $14 per user per month paid yearly, adds the ability to publish and share them. Premium Per User, at $24, is aimed at data professionals who need larger models and more advanced features, and holders of Pro or Microsoft 365 E5 licenses can step up for a $14 add-on. Power BI is now part of Microsoft Fabric, which puts data engineering and Data Factory pipelines in the same platform. Microsoft says the product is used by over 375,000 organizations and has 30 million monthly active users. The trade-offs are that every person who shares content needs a paid license, and that capacity-based Fabric pricing adds a second model that larger buyers must understand before they sign.
Strengths
- +Largest published organization count on this list
- +Lowest verified per-user price for report authors
- +Free account to build reports before buying
Limitations
- −Sharing reports requires a paid Pro or Premium license
- −Listed prices assume yearly payment
- −Fabric capacity purchases add a second pricing model to learn
SummaryPower BI is the best overall BI tool for most companies, especially those on Microsoft 365. It pairs the largest published user base with the lowest verified author price on this list.

Tableau
Salesforce's visual analytics platform for exploring data and publishing interactive dashboards.
8.6overallSalesforce's visual analytics platform for exploring data and publishing interactive dashboards.
Best forAnalyst teams that spend their day on visual data exploration and want a large user community.
Adoption data
more than one millionTableau says its user community has more than one million members across over 500 user groups worldwide; it does not publish a customer count on the page.
Tableau, Why Tableau (2026): “The Tableau Community has more than one million members, spanning over 500 user groups worldwide and our active Community Forums and programs.”
Tableau remains the reference product for visual analytics. Its Standard edition covers browser-based authoring, Tableau Desktop and Prep Builder, and Tableau Pulse for tracking metrics, with prices starting at $15 per user per month billed annually. The Enterprise edition, from $35, adds tools to manage, secure and scale larger deployments, and Tableau Next, from $40, is Salesforce's agentic analytics edition. Tableau Agent works inside authoring and data prep. The pricing page says every deployment requires at least one Creator license, with Creator, Explorer and Viewer licenses available for other users, so the $15 starting figure is not what an analyst who builds content will pay. Tableau does not publish a customer count on its main pages, but it reports a community of more than one million members across over 500 user groups. Buyers should model the mix of license types and the annual contract before comparing it with per-user rivals.
Strengths
- +Deep visual exploration tools for analysts
- +Published US prices for each edition
- +Large community with over 500 user groups
Limitations
- −Annual contract required
- −Every deployment needs at least one Creator license
- −The starting price does not show what a full Creator seat costs
SummaryTableau is the best choice for analyst-heavy teams that care most about visual exploration. Budget for Creator seats and an annual contract.
- 3

Metabase
Open-source BI and embedded analytics tool with a hosted cloud version and flat plan pricing.
8.5overallOpen-source BI and embedded analytics tool with a hosted cloud version and flat plan pricing.
Best forStartups and small data teams that want a free open-source option or a low flat monthly fee.
Adoption data
100,000+Metabase says more than 100,000 companies use its software, a count that includes the free open-source edition.
Metabase, Metabase: Business Intelligence and Embedded Analytics (2026): “Trusted by 100,000+ companies”
Metabase is the most popular open-source BI tool on this list and a common first BI product for startups. The open-source edition is free with unlimited users and includes AI question answering on a model of your choice, an MCP server, a SQL editor and a click-based query builder across 20+ data sources. The hosted Starter plan costs $100 per month with the first 5 users included, or $1,080 a year, and each extra user adds $6 per month. Pro, at $575 per month with 10 users included, adds row and column level permissions, SSO, caching controls, usage auditing and white-label embedded analytics. Metabase says more than 100,000 companies use it, a number that includes self-hosted installs. The trade-offs are that governance features sit behind the Pro price and that teams running the free edition must handle setup, backups and upgrades themselves.
Strengths
- +Free self-hosted edition with unlimited users
- +Flat plan fee with users included
- +Over 100,000 companies by the vendor's count
Limitations
- −Row and column level permissions require the $575 Pro plan
- −Fewer supported data sources than larger suites
- −Self-hosting means running your own upgrades and backups
SummaryMetabase is the best value BI tool for small data teams and startups. Move to Pro when you need row-level security or SSO.

Qlik Cloud Analytics
Qlik's cloud analytics platform with an associative engine, AI agents and built-in data movement from Qlik Talend Cloud.
8.2overallQlik's cloud analytics platform with an associative engine, AI agents and built-in data movement from Qlik Talend Cloud.
Best forLarge companies that want analytics and data integration from one vendor and price by data volume.
Adoption data
75%Qlik says its software is used by 75% of the Fortune 500, the highest large-enterprise share reported by any vendor on this list.
Qlik, Qlik Extends Analytics from Answers to Agentic Action (2026): “Used by 75% of the Fortune 500, Qlik supports customers worldwide.”
Qlik Cloud Analytics is aimed at larger organizations that want analytics, AI agents and data integration from one supplier. Starter costs $300 per month billed annually and includes 10 users and a fixed 10 GB of data for analysis, with Answers Agents, an MCP server, hundreds of connectors and a no-code automation builder. Standard starts at $825 per month for 25 GB and adds managed spaces for governance, unstructured data and generative AI, with no cost for additional users. Premium, from $2,750 per month, adds automated machine learning, public access and SAP data extraction. Qlik says 75% of the Fortune 500 use its software. Pricing by data volume rather than seats helps companies that want to give dashboards to many people, but it means buyers must estimate their data size, and the 10 GB Starter cap cannot be raised.
Strengths
- +Used by 75% of the Fortune 500 by Qlik's count
- +Standard plan has no cost for additional users
- +Data integration from the same vendor
Limitations
- −Starter caps data for analysis at a fixed 10 GB
- −Plans above Starter are priced by data volume, which takes modeling
- −Annual billing on all listed prices
SummaryQlik is a strong fit for enterprises that want to serve many users from one data platform. Smaller teams will find the data-based pricing harder to plan than per-seat rivals.

Zoho Analytics
Zoho's self-service BI and analytics platform with built-in AI agents and 500+ data connectors.
7.8overallZoho's self-service BI and analytics platform with built-in AI agents and 500+ data connectors.
Best forSmall and midsize businesses, especially those already running Zoho apps.
Adoption data
17,000Zoho says over 17,000 businesses use Zoho Analytics as their BI platform.
Zoho, Data Analytics Software & AI-Powered BI Platform - Zoho Analytics (2026): “Over 17,000 businesses choose Zoho Analytics as their BI partner”
Zoho Analytics is a full-stack BI product for small and midsize companies. It connects to 500+ live sources, including files, business apps, databases and data warehouses, and includes a no-code pipeline builder with 250+ transforms for preparing data. Reports and dashboards use a drag-and-drop builder with 50+ chart types. Zia, Zoho's assistant, works with six built-in agents that explain what happened, suggest actions, build dashboards, write SQL and formulas, create pipelines and write Python. Forecasting and what-if models run on your own data. Plans are tiered by users and rows: Basic starts at 2 users and 0.5 million rows, and Standard starts at 5 users. Zoho says over 17,000 businesses use the product. The pricing page did not show US dollar prices from our location, so we marked the price as pending and scored value conservatively.
Strengths
- +500+ data connectors
- +AI agents built into the base product
- +Plans start at small user and row counts
Limitations
- −US dollar prices did not load from our location
- −Plans are capped by rows as well as users
- −Strongest fit inside the Zoho app family
SummaryZoho Analytics is a capable all-in-one BI tool for smaller companies, and the natural choice for Zoho CRM or Zoho Books users. Confirm US pricing for your row count before buying.

Sigma
Warehouse-first analytics platform with a spreadsheet-style interface, live queries and data apps.
7.7overallWarehouse-first analytics platform with a spreadsheet-style interface, live queries and data apps.
Best forTeams on Snowflake, Databricks or another cloud warehouse that want spreadsheet-style analysis on live data.
Adoption data
2,000Sigma said in 2026 that more than 2,000 businesses use its platform, after it added 1.1 million new active users in a single fiscal year.
Sigma, Sigma Announces $200M ARR as Enterprises Abandon Legacy BI for AI-Native Analytics (2026): “More than 2,000 businesses now trust Sigma as the operating layer between their data and the decisions that move their business.”
Sigma is built for companies whose data already lives in a cloud warehouse. Instead of importing data, it runs live queries in Snowflake, Databricks, ClickHouse or the AWS, Azure and Google Cloud warehouses, and inherits access rules from the source. Its connected spreadsheet interface lets finance and operations staff work with warehouse tables using familiar formulas, while analysts can use Python and SQL workbooks. Sigma also sells data apps that act on live data, agents for repeat work, pixel-perfect reports and white-label embedded analytics. In 2026 the company said more than 2,000 businesses use the platform and that it added 1.1 million new active users in one fiscal year. Sigma does not publish a price list, so we marked pricing as pending, and buyers should also budget for the warehouse compute that every Sigma query consumes.
Strengths
- +Spreadsheet interface familiar to finance and operations staff
- +No data extracts: queries run in your warehouse
- +Connections to Snowflake, Databricks, ClickHouse and the major clouds
Limitations
- −No public price list
- −Warehouse compute costs rise with BI usage
- −Needs a cloud data warehouse to be useful
SummarySigma is the best fit for warehouse-centered data teams that want business users working in a spreadsheet view of live data. Get a quote and estimate warehouse costs together.

ThoughtSpot
Search and AI-agent driven analytics platform that lets business users ask questions of data in plain language.
7.7overallSearch and AI-agent driven analytics platform that lets business users ask questions of data in plain language.
Best forCompanies that want business users to ask questions in natural language rather than build dashboards.
Adoption data
133%ThoughtSpot reported a 133% year-over-year increase in platform usage in October 2025; it does not publish a total customer count.
ThoughtSpot, ThoughtSpot Doubles User Adoption On Surging Agentic Analytics Demand (2025): “This demand for intelligence is driving explosive platform growth, as demonstrated by a healthy 133% year-over-year increase in usage”
ThoughtSpot built its product around search, and its Spotter AI agents now let business users ask questions of data in plain language and get charts back. Essentials starts at $25 per user per month billed annually for 5 to 50 users and up to 25 million rows, with interactive dashboards and actionable insights. Pro, from $50 per user per month, raises the limits to 1,000 users and 250 million rows and adds natural-language search and Spotter agents with 25 queries per user per month. Enterprise has unlimited users and data, Analyst Studio for advanced analytics and unlimited LLM tokens, and the vendor says it does not meter or charge for tokens. ThoughtSpot Embedded offers APIs and SDKs for product teams. ThoughtSpot does not publish a customer total; it reported a 133% year-over-year rise in usage in October 2025, so we scored adoption conservatively.
Strengths
- +Published per-user price with a low entry tier
- +LLM tokens not metered on most plans
- +Strong natural-language question answering
Limitations
- −Essentials limited to 50 users and 25 million rows
- −No total customer count published
- −Spotter is capped at 25 queries per user per month on Pro
SummaryThoughtSpot is the best pick for companies that want business users to self-serve answers through natural language. Check the row and query limits before choosing a tier.

Amazon Quick Sight
AWS's managed BI service with per-user author and reader pricing and natural-language Q&A.
7.6overallAWS's managed BI service with per-user author and reader pricing and natural-language Q&A.
Best forCompanies on AWS that need dashboards for many readers at a low per-reader price.
Amazon Quick Sight is the BI service inside AWS, and its pricing is built for wide distribution. Authors, who connect data and build dashboards, cost $24 per user per month, and Readers cost $3, the lowest reader price on this list. Author Pro at $40 and Reader Pro at $20 add generative AI features such as data stories, executive summaries with AI-generated key takeaways and scenario analysis. Companies embedding dashboards in apps or serving unpredictable audiences can switch readers to capacity pricing. AWS is folding Quick Sight into its newer Amazon Quick suite, and in Quick regions Authors get promotional access to Quick Enterprise features until December 31, 2026. Watch the $250 per month account infrastructure fee, which applies once any Pro user or Q&A feature is enabled. AWS does not publish a Quick Sight user count, so adoption is scored conservatively.
Strengths
- +Readers cost $3 per user per month
- +Capacity pricing for embedded or unpredictable audiences
- +Billed through an existing AWS account
Limitations
- −$250 per month account fee once any Pro user or Q&A is enabled
- −No published adoption figure
- −Pricing and branding are changing as AWS rolls out Amazon Quick
SummaryQuick Sight is a low-cost way for AWS customers to put dashboards in front of many readers. Factor in the $250 account fee if you plan to use Pro or Q&A.
- 9

Looker
Google Cloud's BI platform built on a governed semantic layer, with Gemini-powered conversational analytics.
7.4overallGoogle Cloud's BI platform built on a governed semantic layer, with Gemini-powered conversational analytics.
Best forData teams that want one governed set of metric definitions shared by people and AI agents.
Looker is Google Cloud's BI platform and is built around a semantic layer that defines metrics once so that every report and AI agent uses the same numbers. Google now pairs that layer with Gemini-powered conversational analytics, MCP integration and extensible APIs. Looker is sold in three platform editions. Standard is for organizations or teams with fewer than 50 users and includes one production instance, 10 Standard Users and 2 Developer Users. Enterprise adds security features and higher API limits for internal BI, and Embed is for external analytics and custom applications at scale. All three are sold on annual commitment through sales, and data tokens used by AI features beyond an instance's allocation are billed by usage. Google does not publish a Looker customer count, so adoption is scored conservatively, and the lack of public prices weighs on value.
Strengths
- +Strong governance through a single semantic layer
- +Built for AI agents as well as people
- +Embed edition for customer-facing analytics
Limitations
- −Platform editions priced through sales on annual commitment
- −Modeling layer needs developer skills to set up
- −No adoption figure published on Google's pages
SummaryLooker is the strongest choice for companies that put metric governance first and run on Google Cloud. Expect a sales-led process and developer time for modeling.
- 10

Preset
Hosted Apache Superset from the project's creators, with a free tier and low per-user pricing.
6.9overallHosted Apache Superset from the project's creators, with a free tier and low per-user pricing.
Best forSmall teams that want open-source Superset without running servers.
Preset is a managed cloud version of Apache Superset, the open-source BI project. The free Starter plan covers up to 5 users in one workspace with unlimited dashboards and charts, 40+ visualization types, a no-code chart builder, a collaborative SQL editor and a semantic layer. Professional costs $20 per user per month billed annually, or $25 billed monthly, and adds unlimited users, three workspaces, role-based access controls, scheduled email reports, Slack alerts and a 14-day trial. Enterprise is quoted and adds dbt integration, managed private cloud, SSO with SCIM, audit logs and an AI chatbot that uses your own OpenRouter key. Embedded dashboards are an add-on, with viewer licenses from $500 per month for 50 viewers. Preset does not publish a customer count, so adoption is scored low, but the free tier and low per-user price make it one of the cheapest ways to run a hosted BI tool.
Strengths
- +Free plan for up to 5 users
- +Low per-user price on Professional
- +Based on open-source Apache Superset, so no lock-in to a closed format
Limitations
- −Embedded dashboards cost extra, from $500 per month for 50 viewers
- −SSO and audit logs only on Enterprise
- −No published adoption figure
SummaryPreset is a cheap, open-source-based option for small teams comfortable with SQL. Larger companies will need Enterprise for SSO and audit logs.
Choosing a product
- Count creators and viewers separately
- Most BI tools charge more for people who build reports than for people who only read them. Amazon Quick Sight lists Authors at $24 per user per month and Readers at $3. Tableau requires at least one Creator license in every deployment, with cheaper licenses for other users. Before comparing prices, count how many people will build content and how many will only view dashboards, because the reader count drives the bill at most companies.
- Know whether you pay per user or per data volume
- Pricing models differ more than headline numbers suggest. Power BI, Tableau, ThoughtSpot and Preset price per user. Qlik Cloud Analytics prices its Standard and Premium plans by gigabytes of data for analysis, with no cost for additional users on Standard. Metabase charges a flat plan fee with a set number of users included, then $6 per extra user per month on Starter. Model your user count and data size for the next two years before you compare.
- Read what each adoption number measures
- Vendors report scale in different units. Microsoft counts organizations and monthly active users, Metabase counts companies, Zoho counts businesses, Sigma counts businesses on its platform, Qlik reports its share of the Fortune 500, and ThoughtSpot reports usage growth rather than a total. Tableau's figure is community membership. These numbers are not directly comparable, so treat them as a sign of scale rather than a market share table.
- Check where the data is computed
- Sigma and Looker query your cloud data warehouse live, so warehouse compute costs can rise with BI usage. Qlik and Power BI can import data into their own engines, and Qlik's plans cap the data volume you can analyze. If your company already pays for Snowflake, Databricks or BigQuery, ask each vendor how queries hit the warehouse and who pays for that compute.
- Budget for AI features and add-on fees
- AI assistants are now in almost every BI product, but billing varies. ThoughtSpot says it does not meter LLM tokens on its plans, while Amazon Quick Sight adds a $250 per month account infrastructure fee once any Pro user or Q&A feature is enabled. Preset charges $500 per month for 50 embedded dashboard viewer licenses. Ask each vendor which AI and embedding features are included in the base price.
Frequently asked questions
What is the most widely used business intelligence tool?
By published figures, Microsoft Power BI leads this list: Microsoft says it is used by over 375,000 organizations and has 30 million monthly active users. Metabase reports more than 100,000 companies, a count that includes its free open-source edition, and Zoho reports over 17,000 businesses on Zoho Analytics.
How much does a BI tool cost per user?
Verified US prices on this list start at $14 per user per month for Power BI Pro paid yearly, $15 for Tableau Standard billed annually, $20 for Preset Professional billed annually, $24 for an Amazon Quick Sight Author and $25 for ThoughtSpot Essentials. Quick Sight Readers cost $3 per user per month. Metabase and Qlik charge flat plan fees instead: $100 per month for 5 users and $300 per month for 10 users.
Is there a free business intelligence tool?
Yes. Metabase's open-source edition is free with unlimited users if you host it yourself, and Preset's Starter plan is free for up to 5 users on its cloud. Power BI offers a free account for building reports, but sharing them requires a paid Pro or Premium Per User license.
Which BI tools work best with a cloud data warehouse?
Sigma and Looker are built to query a cloud warehouse live. Sigma connects to Snowflake, Databricks, ClickHouse and the major clouds and inherits governance from the source, while Looker adds a semantic layer on Google Cloud. Live querying avoids data copies but adds warehouse compute costs.
Which BI tool has the best AI features?
Most vendors now ship AI agents. ThoughtSpot centers its product on natural-language search with Spotter agents and does not meter LLM tokens, Zoho Analytics includes six built-in agents, Qlik offers Answers Agents and an MCP server on every plan, and Looker uses Gemini for conversational analytics. Check which AI features are in the plan you are buying.
How did we rank these BI tools?
Each tool gets scores out of 10 for features (35 percent), adoption (35 percent) and value (30 percent). Adoption uses a published figure from the vendor where one exists, and value uses US list prices checked on 2026-11-06. We compared documented features and published prices and did not run hands-on tests.
