Adoption figures come from company filings, official releases or independent surveys, linked in each entry. We compared documented features and published prices; we did not run hands-on tests. Scoring method

This list is for people who now ask an AI for answers instead of scanning ten blue links, and who want to compare the main options on documented user numbers, query volume and the price of the paid tier. It covers consumer answer engines available in the United States as of November 2026, plus two search APIs (Exa and You.com) for teams building their own AI search. Each user figure comes from a company filing, earnings remarks or the vendor's own published statistics, and each price was copied from the vendor's U.S. page. Scores weight features 35%, adoption 35% and value 30%. We compared documented features and published prices; we did not run answer quality tests.

AssessmentGoogle AI Mode leads on reach and cost: it is free inside Google Search, runs on Gemini models, and Alphabet says it passed 1 billion monthly active users. ChatGPT Search is a close second because web search with citations is available on every ChatGPT plan, from Free to the $8 Go tier. Microsoft's Bing AI Mode and Copilot suit Microsoft 365 households, Brave Search is the low-cost private pick at $3.00 per month for ad-free results, and Perplexity remains the most research-focused answer engine at $17 per month on annual billing. DuckDuckGo and Kagi serve privacy-minded users, while Exa and You.com price web search per 1,000 API calls for developers.

  1. 1

    Google AI Mode

    9.4overall

Google Search's conversational answer mode, powered by Gemini models, with follow-up questions and links to the web.

Best forMost people who want AI answers inside the search engine they already use, at no cost.

    Adoption data

1 billionAlphabet said in its second quarter 2026 earnings remarks that AI Mode in Google Search had passed 1 billion monthly active users since its global expansion.

Alphabet, Q2 2026 earnings call: Remarks from our CEO (2026): “Since expanding AI Mode globally last October, we’ve surpassed 1 billion monthly active users.”

Google AI Mode is the most widely used AI search experience by a wide margin. Alphabet told investors in its second quarter 2026 remarks that AI Mode had passed 1 billion monthly active users, and in the third quarter it said AI Mode queries run three times longer than traditional searches, with one in five using voice, images or documents. Google describes AI Mode as running on its latest Gemini models with reasoning and multimodal understanding, and every answer keeps follow-up questions and web links in one thread. The core product is free inside Google Search. Paid Google AI plans raise limits: Plus costs $4.99 per month in the U.S., Pro $19.99 and Ultra starts at $99.99. The weak points are scope and clarity. Deep Search and some models are limited to select countries, and the paid tiers bundle storage, Gemini app features and creative tools, so buyers cannot pay only for more search. For anyone who mainly wants quick AI answers, the free tier already does the job.

    Strengths

    • +Largest documented user base of any AI search product on this list
    • +Free inside Google Search with no separate account needed
    • +Paid Google AI plans start at $4.99 per month in the U.S.

    Limitations

    • −Some features, such as Deep Search, are limited to select countries
    • −Google Search is ad-supported
    • −Paid plans are sold as Gemini bundles, so search limits are hard to separate from other features

SummaryGoogle AI Mode combines the largest documented audience with a free tier that covers most needs. It is the default pick unless you want a separate assistant or an ad-free engine.

  2. 3

    Microsoft Bing with Copilot

    8.5overall

Microsoft's AI search in Bing, with AI Overviews at the top of results and an AI Mode tab for follow-up questions.

Best forWindows and Microsoft 365 users who want AI answers in Bing and Copilot in Office apps.

    Adoption data

150 millionMicrosoft said in its fiscal 2026 first quarter earnings call that its Copilot family had passed 150 million monthly active users across work and consumer uses.

Microsoft, Microsoft FY26 Q1 earnings conference call (2025): “And our first party family of Copilots now has surpassed 150 million monthly active users across information work, coding, security, science, health, and consumer.”

Microsoft's AI search now has two layers in Bing. AI Overviews put a summarized, sourced answer at the top of the results page, and an AI Mode tab opens a longer conversation where you can ask follow-up questions, view images and videos, and select Show all to see every reference used. Microsoft positions Overviews for quick facts and AI Mode for complex research. Both are free. The paid route is Microsoft 365 Personal at $9.99 per month or $99.99 per year in the U.S., which adds Copilot inside Word, Excel, PowerPoint and Outlook plus Office apps and storage, so it makes most sense for people who want those apps anyway. On adoption, Microsoft says its Copilot family passed 150 million monthly active users, but that total spans coding, security and work tools as well as consumer search, so it overstates Bing's AI search alone. The main drawback is that Bing remains ad-supported, and nothing in the paid tier is a search-only upgrade.

    Strengths

    • +Free AI answers in Bing with a full list of references
    • +Microsoft 365 Personal bundles Office apps and Copilot features for $9.99 per month
    • +Built into Windows and Edge for many users

    Limitations

    • −Microsoft's 150 million figure covers all Copilot products, not only search
    • −Bing is ad-supported
    • −The paid tier is an Office bundle, not a search upgrade

SummaryBing with Copilot is a solid free AI search with transparent references, and the best fit for Microsoft 365 households. People outside that ecosystem will find Google AI Mode broader.

  3. 5

    Perplexity

    8.1overall

A cited answer engine that searches the web and lets paid users choose between leading AI models.

Best forResearchers and heavy users who want cited answers, deep research reports and model choice.

Perplexity was built as an answer engine from the start, and its feature set is the most research-oriented here. The Pro page lists deep research, access to top AI models with the option to pick between them, polished documents and apps through Perplexity Computer, premium data and higher usage limits and memory. Pro costs $17 per month on annual billing, and Max, with expert-level research and frontier models, costs $167 per month on annual billing. A free plan covers basic cited answers. The company's engineering blog says its search infrastructure serves millions of user queries each hour, but we did not find a current, specific user or query count from Perplexity itself or an independent survey, so adoption is scored conservatively and that weighs on its rank. Plan comparison is also harder than it needs to be: bonus Computer credits and limited-time offers change what each tier includes. For people who mostly need research with sources rather than quick lookups, Pro is still strong value.

    Strengths

    • +Answers are built around visible source citations
    • +Pro bundles deep research and model selection in one plan
    • +Free plan available

    Limitations

    • −No current primary user or query figure from the company was found for this list
    • −Computer credits and limited-time bonuses make plans harder to compare
    • −Max at $167 per month is a large step up from Pro

SummaryPerplexity has the most research-focused feature set and a fair $17 Pro tier. It ranks below the big platforms only because it lacks a current, citable user figure.

  4. 6

    DuckDuckGo

    8.0overall

A private search engine with optional AI features, including Duck.ai for anonymized chats with third-party AI models.

Best forPeople who want private search where AI is optional and can be turned off.

    Adoption data

3 billionDuckDuckGo states on its site that it handles 3 billion searches a month.

DuckDuckGo, DuckDuckGo Subscription (2026): “3 Billion Monthly Searches”

DuckDuckGo treats AI as an optional layer on top of private search. Its site says the search engine never tracks your searches, and Duck.ai lets you chat with third-party models such as ChatGPT and Claude through DuckDuckGo, which anonymizes the conversations and says they are never used to train AI. Unlike most engines here, DuckDuckGo lets you turn AI off entirely. Search and Duck.ai are free. The DuckDuckGo subscription adds more advanced AI models in Duck.ai along with a VPN, personal information removal and identity theft restoration, but the page we fetched did not show a USD price, so the price check is pending. DuckDuckGo states it handles 3 billion searches a month, which is large for a private engine though far below Google. Results depend largely on Bing's index, as Brave's comparison notes, and AI answers play a smaller role than on Google AI Mode or Perplexity. It suits people who want AI available but not pushed.

    Strengths

    • +Search and Duck.ai are free
    • +AI can be switched off entirely
    • +Large published search volume for a private engine

    Limitations

    • −Subscription price was not shown in USD on the page fetched for this list
    • −Brave notes that DuckDuckGo relies on the Bing index for its results
    • −AI answers are less central than on Google, ChatGPT or Perplexity

SummaryDuckDuckGo is the pick for private search where AI stays optional, with free Duck.ai access to major models. Users who want AI-first answers will get more from Google AI Mode or Perplexity.

  5. 7

    Exa

    7.8overall

A web search engine built for AI agents and apps, sold by API with search, contents and deep research endpoints.

Best forDevelopers who need web search inside an AI product, agent or coding tool.

    Adoption data

400,000Exa said in its 2026 Series C announcement that it powers search for companies including Cursor, Cognition and HubSpot and for more than 400,000 developers.

Exa, Exa Raises $250M Series C to Build the Search Engine for AIs (2026): “Exa already powers search for Cursor, Cognition, HubSpot, OpenRouter, Monday.com and over 400,000 developers.”

Exa is a search engine whose main users are other AI systems. Its pricing page lists a Search endpoint from $4 per 1,000 requests with webpage text and highlights, Agent runs for asynchronous deep research with citations at $0.012 to $1.00 per run, and a Contents endpoint at $1 per 1,000 pages. The free Starter tier gives $10 in credits every month plus a $10 onboarding bonus without a payment method, along with MCP server access, a Claude Connector, a ChatGPT plugin and more than 50 integrations. Exa also offers separate people, company and scholarly works indexes, which suits sales and research tools. In its Series C announcement the company said it powers search for Cursor, Cognition, HubSpot and more than 400,000 developers, and that its crawlers track over 500 billion URLs. The limits are obvious for consumers: there is no search box to replace Google. For developers, the per-call model is cheap to test but needs monitoring once traffic grows.

    Strengths

    • +$10 in free credits every month with no payment method
    • +Specialized indexes for people, companies and research papers
    • +Used by well-known AI products such as Cursor and Cognition

    Limitations

    • −Not a consumer search engine; requires an app or integration
    • −Costs scale with call volume and are harder to predict than a flat plan
    • −Adoption figure counts developers, not end users

SummaryExa is the strongest search API on this list for teams building agents or AI features. It is not a replacement for a consumer search engine.

  6. 8

    Kagi

    7.4overall

A paid, ad-free search engine with Kagi Assistant and Quick Answer summaries on every plan.

Best forPeople willing to pay for ad-free search with no tracking and access to many AI models.

    Adoption data

75,952Kagi's public statistics page showed 75,952 members in November 2026.

Kagi, Search Stats (2026): “75,952 Members pioneering the next frontier of search”

Kagi is the only engine here that charges everyone, and that is the point. Its pricing page says the service has no ads and no tracking and is funded by users. Starter costs $5 per month for 300 searches, Professional $10 for unlimited searches, and Ultimate $25 adds Kagi Assistant's Research mode and flagship models from OpenAI, Anthropic, Google, Mistral, xAI and others, all before sales tax. Quick Answer turns a results page into a short summary, triggered by adding a question mark to a query. Kagi's fair pricing policy credits any month you do not use the plan. The trade-offs are scale and cost. There is no permanent free tier, only a trial with 100 searches, and Starter's cap is easy to hit for heavy searchers. Kagi's public stats page showed 75,952 members, which is tiny next to Google or Bing, so adoption is scored low even though paying members are an unusually strong signal of satisfaction.

    Strengths

    • +No ads and no tracking, by design of the business model
    • +Ultimate offers one of the widest model menus of any search product
    • +Unused months are credited back automatically

    Limitations

    • −No permanent free plan, only a 100 search trial
    • −Starter caps you at 300 searches per month
    • −Small user base compared with ad-supported engines

SummaryKagi is the best paid option for people who want no ads, no tracking and a broad choice of AI models. Its price and small user base keep it in the lower half of this ranking.

  7. 9

    You.com

    6.8overall

Web search and research APIs for AI applications, with a free MCP tier and per-call pricing.

Best forDevelopers who want web search, cited answers and multi-step research as separate API endpoints.

You.com began as a consumer AI search engine, but its site now describes the company as search and inference for AI, and its products are APIs. The pricing page lists a free tier of 100 Web Search API queries per day via MCP with no API key, account or card, then pay-as-you-go pricing with no minimums, seats or platform fee. The Web Search API and the Answer API, which returns a cited answer in a single call, each cost $5 per 1,000 calls. The Research API plans, searches and cross-references sources across five effort levels, from Lite at $12 per 1,000 calls to Exhaustive at $450, and a Contents API converts known URLs to Markdown or HTML for $1 per 1,000 pages. That menu is flexible for teams that want to choose how much reasoning they pay for. We found no published user or customer count, so adoption scores low, and consumers looking for a search box should look elsewhere on this list.

    Strengths

    • +100 free Web Search API queries a day with no account
    • +No minimums, seats or platform fee on pay as you go
    • +Research effort levels let teams trade cost for depth

    Limitations

    • −No longer positioned as a consumer search engine
    • −No published user or customer count found
    • −Research Exhaustive costs $450 per 1,000 calls

SummaryYou.com is a capable search API with clear per-call pricing and tunable research depth. Exa ranks above it on documented adoption.

Choosing a product

Decide whether you need a paid tier at all
Google AI Mode, ChatGPT Search, Bing AI Mode, Brave Search, DuckDuckGo and Perplexity all have free tiers. Paid plans mostly buy higher usage limits, stronger models or extras such as deep research. Try the free version for a week of real questions before paying.
Check how each engine shows its sources
OpenAI's help center warns that search results and citations can be incomplete, outdated or incorrect, and the same applies to every engine here. Prefer tools that put numbered links next to each claim, and open the source before you rely on a figure.
Compare query volume and user counts with care
Vendors report different measures: Alphabet gives monthly active users for AI Mode, OpenAI gives weekly users for all of ChatGPT, Brave gives browser users, DuckDuckGo gives monthly searches and Kagi gives paying members. These numbers show scale, not answer quality, and they are not directly comparable.
Weigh privacy and ads
Kagi is funded by subscriptions and shows no ads, Brave Search Premium removes ads for $3.00 per month, and DuckDuckGo says Duck.ai chats are never used to train AI. Google and Microsoft run ad-supported search. If query privacy matters, read each privacy policy before switching your default.
Developers should price per call, not per seat
Exa and You.com sell web search to software, not people. Exa search starts at $4 per 1,000 requests and You.com's Web Search API at $5 per 1,000 calls, and both offer free allowances for testing. Estimate monthly call volume before choosing.
