UN Tourism counted a record 1.52 billion international tourist arrivals in 2025, and WTTC estimates that travel and tourism contributed $11.6 trillion, or 9.8% of global GDP, while supporting 366 million jobs. Analysis
This page brings together official and survey figures on tourism: international arrivals by region, the sector's economic contribution and hotel performance, the United States as a destination, travel flows in Europe, Canada and Asia-Pacific, traveler spending and sentiment, and tourism's environmental footprint. Most figures describe 2025 or the first half of 2026; a few Eurostat and WTTC figures describe 2024, the latest year published. Coverage is global, with added detail for the United States, the European Union, Spain, the United Kingdom, Canada, Australia and New Zealand.
International tourism ended 2025 at a record. UN Tourism estimates 1.52 billion international arrivals, almost 60 million more than in 2024, and international tourism receipts of about $1.9 trillion. Europe remained the largest destination region with 793 million arrivals, and Spain alone received a record 96.8 million international tourists according to its National Statistics Institute. Asia and the Pacific still sat 9% below its 2019 level, while the Middle East was 39% above it.
WTTC's economic impact research puts the sector's total GDP contribution at $11.6 trillion in 2025 and its employment at 366 million jobs. Leisure accounts for most of the spending, at $6.15 trillion, while GBTA forecasts business travel spending of about $1.71 trillion in 2026. Hotel results remain firm: Hilton reported 5.8% growth in comparable revenue per available room in the third quarter of 2026.
North America is the exception to the 2025 growth story. WTTC reports that international visitor numbers to the United States fell 5.5% and their spending fell 4.6% to $176 billion. Statistics Canada recorded a 10.9% fall in international arrivals to Canada, driven by fewer cross-border trips, even as overseas visitors rose 7.5%. American travelers are spending carefully: Deloitte found planned holiday trip budgets down 18% in 2025.
2026 has been more uneven. UN Tourism measured roughly flat arrivals in the first half, with the Middle East down 22% because of the regional conflict, while Eurostat recorded a record 1.3 billion nights in EU tourist accommodation over the same period. European Travel Commission surveys show demand holding but shifting: 52% of Europeans prefer lesser-known destinations and 76% say climate factors affect how they travel.
International tourist arrivals
International arrivals count overnight visitors crossing a border, so a traveler visiting three countries counts three times. By this measure 2025 was a record year, though growth of 4% was a return to the pre-pandemic trend rather than a rebound. Regional recovery is uneven: Asia and the Pacific remains below 2019 while the Middle East is far above it. The 2026 figures are preliminary estimates made during an active conflict and are likely to be revised.

Economic contribution and spending
Two families of measures appear here. UN Tourism reports international receipts, the money foreign visitors spend in a country, while WTTC estimates the total contribution of travel and tourism to GDP including domestic travel and indirect effects. WTTC totals are therefore much larger and are modeled estimates rather than official accounts. Hotel revenue per available room, reported by Hilton for its own system, gives a market reading for 2026 that the annual series do not yet cover.

The United States as a destination
The United States has the largest travel economy, driven mostly by domestic travel, but it lost international visitors in 2025 while other destinations gained. WTTC's annual figures and the International Trade Administration's first-half 2025 export data measure different periods, which is why the half-year record and the annual decline can both be true: international spending was strong early in 2025 and weakened later.

Europe, Canada and Asia-Pacific destinations
Europe is both the largest destination region and the largest source of travelers, and most European trips are domestic. Spain set new records for international tourists and their spending in 2025, and Eurostat data shows EU accommodation demand at record levels in the first half of 2026 even as global arrivals stalled. Canada moved the other way in 2025 as cross-border trips with the United States fell, while New Zealand and Australia show steadier recovery. National offices count visitors differently, so compare trends rather than levels.

Traveler intentions, budgets and behavior
Surveys show strong intent to travel combined with tight budgets. Europeans' travel intentions reached 81% for summer and autumn 2026, while US travelers report cutting trips and shrinking budgets to keep traveling. These are self-reported intentions and attitudes from different samples and dates, so they describe direction rather than precise behavior. The Booking.com figures come from a sponsored survey of US travelers fielded by HarrisX in August 2026.

Environmental footprint
Tourism's emissions come mostly from transport, especially flights, and from energy used in accommodation. WTTC estimates that the sector's share of global greenhouse gas emissions fell between 2019 and 2024 while its economic output grew, though the absolute level remains large. Traveler surveys from the European Travel Commission show climate concerns are widespread but only partly translate into changed plans.

Methodology
Figures come from official statistics (UN Tourism, Eurostat, Spain's National Statistics Institute, Statistics Canada, Stats NZ, the UK Office for National Statistics, the Australian Bureau of Statistics and the US International Trade Administration), industry research bodies (WTTC, the European Travel Commission, GBTA), company results (Hilton), an aircraft manufacturer forecast (Airbus) and original surveys (Deloitte, Booking.com with HarrisX). Definitions differ: UN Tourism and INE count international overnight tourists, Statistics Canada and the ABS count border crossings including same-day trips, Eurostat counts nights in tourist accommodation, and WTTC models the sector's total GDP contribution, including domestic travel and indirect effects. 2026 figures are preliminary or forecasts and are likely to be revised. ONS notes that 2024 and 2025 UK estimates are not fully comparable because of a survey redesign. Survey results reflect each sample and fieldwork date.
