Analysis

This page collects current figures on who owns pets, how many animals they keep, what owners spend, how pets are insured and cared for, and what happens in animal shelters. Most figures describe the United States in 2025 and 2026, drawn from the American Pet Products Association, the Human Animal Bond Research Institute (HABRI), the ASPCA, Shelter Animals Count and NAPHIA. A separate section covers the UK, Europe, Australia and Canada, using UK Pet Food, PDSA, FEDIAF, Animal Medicines Australia and the Canadian Animal Health Institute.

Pet ownership in the United States is broad and still edging up. APPA counts 95 million pet-owning households in 2025, with dog ownership rising from 51% to 53% of households (71 million) and cat ownership reaching 39% (53 million). HABRI's 2026 adult survey found 74% of Americans own a pet, another 15% intend to get one, and 64% of owners have more than one.

Spending has grown more slowly than in the pandemic years and is shifting toward essentials. APPA puts 2025 US pet industry expenditures at $158 billion, up 3.7%, and projects $165 billion for 2026, with roughly 2 points of growth from inflation. APPA found 22% of owners spent less on their pets in 2025, and veterinary care now takes 29% of dog owners' pet budgets against 27% for food. Rover's 2026 survey found 83% of pet parents had noticed rising costs, and 55% said costs had affected the level of care they could provide.

Insurance and preventive care are expanding but unevenly. NAPHIA counted 7.6 million insured pets in North America at the end of 2025, up from 7.03 million a year earlier. In the UK, PDSA reports 67% of dogs and 48% of cats were insured in 2026, and microchipping reached 88% of dogs and 83% of cats. In Australia, Animal Medicines Australia found 12% of owners needed financial help with vet bills.

Shelters remain under pressure. The ASPCA reports 5.8 million dogs and cats entered US shelters and rescues in 2025, 4.2 million were adopted and about 597,000 were euthanized, an 8% euthanasia rate compared with 10% in 2019. Shelter Animals Count's mid-year 2026 data show intake rising again to 3.7 million in six months, driven by cats, while adult dogs make up 66% of dogs still in care. Outside the US, ownership is similarly high: 62% of UK households, 73% of Australian households and 49% of European households own a pet.

How many US households own pets

APPA's National Pet Owners Survey puts US pet ownership at 95 million households in 2025, with dogs in 71 million and cats in 53 million. Dog ownership rose from 51% to 53% of households in a year, and cat ownership grew 5% after a 23% jump in 2024. Smaller species are counted in separate APPA reports, so household totals by species overlap and should not be summed. HABRI's 2026 survey measures adults rather than households, which is why its 74% ownership rate is not directly comparable with APPA's household counts.

Spending and the pet economy

APPA puts US pet industry spending at $158 billion in 2025 and projects $165 billion for 2026, with roughly 2 points of the projected growth coming from inflation. Owners are still spending but trading down in places: 22% spent less on their pets in 2025, and veterinary care now takes a larger slice of dog owners' budgets than food. Rover's 2026 cost estimates show the lifetime bill for a dog or cat can run to tens of thousands of dollars. Company results such as Chewy's quarterly sales show where part of that spending lands; they cover one retailer and are not a market total.

Pet insurance and veterinary care

Insurance remains a minority product in North America but is growing quickly: NAPHIA counted 7.6 million insured pets at the end of 2025. Uptake is far higher in the UK, where PDSA found 67% of dogs insured in 2026. Preventive care also differs by species: Animal Medicines Australia found cats less likely than dogs to have been vaccinated in the past year, while PDSA reports rising microchipping rates for both UK dogs and cats. Insurance figures from NAPHIA count policies, while PDSA and Animal Medicines Australia rely on owner self-reports, so the measures are not interchangeable.

Shelters, adoption and where pets come from

ASPCA figures based on Shelter Animals Count data show 5.8 million dogs and cats entered US shelters and rescues in 2025 and 4.2 million were adopted. Euthanasia has fallen to 8% of outcomes from 10% in 2019, but dogs are staying longer and shelters remain near capacity. Shelter Animals Count's 2026 mid-year data point to rising intake again, driven by cats. ASPCA's annual totals and Shelter Animals Count's mid-year counts and projections use different reporting periods and estimation steps, so they should not be combined into a single series. In the UK, PDSA data show a slowly growing share of pets coming from rescue centres.

Pet ownership outside the United States

Household pet ownership is high across English-speaking markets and Europe. UK Pet Food estimates 62% of UK households own a pet in 2026, Animal Medicines Australia puts Australia at 73% in 2025, and FEDIAF counts 140 million pet-owning households across Europe in 2024. Estimates for the same country can differ by method: UK Pet Food counts 15.5 million dogs while PDSA, which surveys adults rather than households, estimates 10.2 million. Readers comparing countries should check whether a figure counts households, adults or animals.

Pets as family members

Survey data from several countries describe pets as close family members and a source of wellbeing. HABRI's 2026 survey found broad public support for pet-friendly spaces and housing, and PDSA and Animal Medicines Australia find that most owners say their pets improve their lives, while companionship is the top reason UK owners give for getting a pet. Cost and housing rules are the main barriers for Americans who want a pet. HABRI is funded partly by the pet industry, so its findings should be read alongside the other sources. Breed rankings from the American Kennel Club reflect registered purebred dogs only.

Methodology

We selected figures from industry associations (APPA, NAPHIA, UK Pet Food, FEDIAF, Animal Medicines Australia, the Canadian Animal Health Institute), animal welfare organizations (ASPCA, Shelter Animals Count, PDSA), the Human Animal Bond Research Institute, the American Kennel Club and company publications from Chewy and Rover, and checked every quote against the live source page. Ownership measures differ: APPA, UK Pet Food, FEDIAF and Animal Medicines Australia count households, while HABRI and PDSA survey adults, so their percentages are not interchangeable. Shelter figures from the ASPCA and Shelter Animals Count use different reporting periods and estimation steps. Several sources are trade bodies or companies with a commercial interest in pets, Rover's cost ranges are its own estimates, FEDIAF's European figures describe 2024 and Canada's describe 2024, and money figures for Australia and Europe are in local currency.
