Electric Vehicle Statistics 2026

Electric car sales topped 20 million worldwide in 2025, one in four new cars sold, according to the IEA, with China at almost 55% of its market. Battery electric cars took 22.7% of EU registrations in the first nine months of 2026 (ACEA), while in the US they fell to 6% of sales after tax credits ended (EIA). BloombergNEF put battery pack prices at a record low of $108 per kWh in 2025.

Analysis

This page collects figures on electric vehicle sales, charging, batteries, running costs and public attitudes, each tied to the agency, research group, trade body or survey that produced it. Most figures describe 2025 and the first three quarters of 2026, with global data from the IEA and BloombergNEF, national data from Statistics Canada, the FCAI in Australia, ACEA, the ICCT, SMMT and the UK Department for Transport, and US data from the EIA, Cox Automotive, AAA, Pew Research Center and Gallup. Unless noted, IEA electric car figures include both battery electric and plug-in hybrid models.

The global market kept growing in 2025 but became more uneven. The IEA counts more than 20 million electric car sales, up 20%, for a quarter of new car sales worldwide. China sold more than 13 million and reached almost 55% of its own market, while Chinese automakers supplied 60% of global electric car sales and exports doubled to more than 2.5 million. First-quarter 2026 sales were 8% lower than a year earlier because of policy changes in China and the US, yet the IEA expects 23 million sales for the full year.

National policy explains most of the differences between markets. ACEA data show battery electric cars rising from 17.4% of EU registrations in 2025 to 22.7% in the first nine months of 2026, and the ICCT counted a 69% jump in European battery electric registrations in September 2026. In Canada, Statistics Canada recorded a 34.7% fall in zero-emission registrations in 2025 when rebates paused, followed by a recovery in early 2026. Australia reached a record 24.9% battery electric share in August 2026, according to the FCAI.

In the US, the end of federal tax credits in September 2025 cut the battery electric share from a record 12% that month to 6% in the first nine months of 2026, according to the EIA, while conventional hybrids climbed to 16% of sales. Cox Automotive counts nearly 25% of third-quarter 2026 sales as electrified in some form. EVs still made up only about 2% of registered US light-duty vehicles in 2024, so fleet turnover will take many years.

Costs and attitudes shape the next phase. BloombergNEF found battery pack prices down 8% to $108 per kWh in 2025, and the ICCT estimates battery electric cars were 33% cheaper to drive than gasoline cars in the EU. AAA testing shows cold weather can cut EV range by 39.0%. Pew Research Center found 53% of US adults unlikely to seriously consider an EV for their next vehicle in 2026, while 44% would seriously consider a hybrid.

Global electric car sales and fleet

Electric cars, counting battery electric and plug-in hybrid models, passed 20 million annual sales in 2025 and took one in four new car sales worldwide, according to the IEA. Growth slowed in the two largest markets after policy changes in China and the United States, which pulled first-quarter 2026 sales below the prior year. The IEA and BloombergNEF both expect electric cars to make up just over a quarter of global car sales in 2026. Long-range projections depend heavily on policy and are scenarios, not predictions.

China and other markets

China remains the center of the market: it sold more than 13 million electric cars in 2025, close to 55% of its new car sales, and its exports doubled. Elsewhere, incentives drive sharp swings. Statistics Canada recorded a one-third fall in zero-emission registrations in 2025 and a rebound once federal rebates returned in 2026, while Australia set monthly records in 2026. Several Southeast Asian markets grew quickly on lower-cost Chinese models, though Vietnam shows a domestic maker can lead.

Europe grew as tighter EU CO2 targets took effect. ACEA data show battery electric cars at 17.4% of EU registrations in 2025 and 22.7% in the first nine months of 2026, with plug-in hybrids also rising, while hybrids without a plug remain the most popular powertrain. The UK registered almost half a million battery electric cars in 2025 and reached a 30.0% monthly share in June 2026, but stayed below its mandate level. Public networks still grew by more than a third in 2025 to over 7 million points, and China holds about two thirds of them. Batteries and running costs

Battery prices keep falling: BloombergNEF's survey put average pack prices at a record low of $108 per kWh in 2025. Running costs favor EVs when charged at home, with the ICCT finding battery electric cars 33% cheaper to drive in the EU in 2025 and the IEA estimating US savings of about $860 a year. AAA data show the limits: savings depend on local fuel and electricity prices, and cold weather cuts range sharply.

Public attitudes in the United States

US interest in buying an EV has cooled and is split along party lines. Pew found 53% of adults unlikely to seriously consider an EV for their next vehicle in 2026, compared with 44% who would seriously consider a hybrid, and Gallup's 2025 survey found 47% would not buy an EV. Hybrids draw broader interest in both surveys. Question wording differs between Pew and Gallup, so their percentages should not be compared directly.

Methodology

Figures were selected from primary publishers: an international agency (IEA), national statistical and energy agencies (EIA, Statistics Canada, UK Department for Transport), the European Environment Agency, industry associations that compile registration data (ACEA, SMMT, FCAI), research groups (ICCT, BloombergNEF), a market data company (Cox Automotive, including Kelley Blue Book), a motoring organization (AAA) and survey organizations (Pew Research Center, Gallup). Each quote was fetched from the source page and checked against it. Definitions differ: IEA electric car figures include plug-in hybrids, while ACEA, SMMT, FCAI and ICCT market shares here refer to battery electric cars unless stated, Statistics Canada counts zero-emission vehicles including plug-in hybrids, and the EIA and Kelley Blue Book use different US sales estimates. Forecasts from the IEA and BloombergNEF are scenario-based projections. Survey results reflect self-reported views of US adults at the time of fieldwork.
